Introducing my new hens (with pictures- hopefully!)

Recommended Posts

I thought I would share my addiction - the equivalent of alcoholics anonymous for those of us with morehens disease.

I lost my first omlet hen Trinny in September to Peritonitis and was facing a winter without eggs (thanks to another gingernut ranger in retirement and a lovely collection of moulting purebreeds) so I went to purchase a couple more (2 at most) hens... heres what I came home with.....

Rula - the smallest goldstar hybird - who laid within an hour of getting to my house. Here she is saying hello to the big girls.

Moosie - a gold laced orp who looks like she's been boil washed. Shes just started laying...

The next two snuck in the boxes when I was not looking (Ok that is not quite true.... they had their own boxes)...

Noodle - the sweetest buff sussex

Lola the showgirl

The WIR is now full (but not full to bursting  )

Enjoy!

she will grow into a BIG girl though! Shirley, one of my sussexes (not sure what type she is) is absolutely massive. I have a light sussex who I think is developmentally delayed, and Chardonnay - top chook and oldest - is a pretty hefty silver sussex. I like the sussex breed they seem to be good at just getting on with life!

She (Noodle) is currently 2nd to bottom in the pecking order - but I can tell she has aspirations. It is the Orps who seem a bit developmentally challenged - especially the blue one. Bless her. My boss, who is Austrian, told me today about a famous Austrian proverb: ' A blind chicken will often find an ear of corn'. I am afraid in the case of the blue orp - even with 2 perfectly working eyes - if she did find the ear of corn in time, she would not be allowed near it (buts its OK she gets special extra's when the others aren't looking!).

I ended up going to Widgits near Reading. There are suppliers more local to me (mill house farm) but they only sell hybrids, which is fine, but I quite like a mixture (and I had been let down by them in the past). Rachael at Widgits has a really nice set up with lovely birds, a good selection and you can see the mummys and daddys too. She also put up with my less that speedy decision making, if I could have bought another 4, I would have done  She also happened to have some spare boxes to use when the morehens disease tookover :D
