debadoodledoo
Hi, Sorry in advance, and I hope these aren't stupid questions Garlic ~ I'm sure I read to add it to the girls feed, should I use horse garlic powder, kitchen garlic powder or fresh? Red mite powder ~ again I'm sure I read you put in the girls nesting box, but do I also put it directly on the girls? and also how often should I use it, is it for prevention or cure? don't want to think of Myrtle or flossie being bitten by the little critters if and when they appear Many thanks Debs x

Red mite live in the house and come out to feed on the chickens at night, so you would find them in the house not on the chickens. You can buy treatments e.g. poultry shield to wash the house with for prevention, although wooden coops are more prone to them, not eglus. I've never had red mite in 18 months, but had lice, and treated with a powder.
Sheilaz
Redmite prevention is so easy, I would definitely recommend rubbing dry Diatom powder on the ends of the roosting bars. Gina's been lucky, redmite is very common, esp in this hot weather, and they are a pain to get rid of when established. But, so much easier with an Eglu, and preventative measures and regular inspection of the bars, and dismantled Eglu, really pays off. No such thing as a stupid question on this forum, we've most of us learnt from scratch, so do ask away, and welcome to the forum.

chelsea
we use redmite powder as prevention. We always sprinkle in the eglu after cleaning weekly. We also dust the girls about once a month. I dont think its absolutely necessary to do this but we have had no red mite yet *touch wood* Smells lovely.
Guest
Hello all, with the red mite powder, can it be added to a dusting bowl (plant pot etc) so the girl's will self dust? If so how much? (I haven't got any chooks yet)
chelsea
we do a light sprinkle in the eglu once its cleaned out. With dusting...we always do it at night when its dusk and they've gone to bed....apparently redmite comes out at night to feed so we always do it that way....just a light sprinkle on each hen. I suppose you could do it to their dustbath.....dont see why not !

(I haven't got any chooks yet) Hi I throw a handful of powder in my girls dustbath - (a big pot full of sand)- just watch it when they've finished - when they shake off it's like a dust explosion
