LauraJ
Our poor, silly Black Rock Eggburta managed to climb her way up onto our 6ft fence this afternoon, had a good look at nextdoors garden, and their Siberian Husky dog, and jumped. We saw it happen and got nextdoor pretty quickly but the dog had already chased her down the garden, and she died a short time later from shock we think. Does anyone know how we could stop the remaining girls from climbing onto the fence? We have a wood store next the fence that she jumped onto, and from there got onto the fence, but we cant move that Very sad day, and I also feel really bad for nextdoor as it wasn't the dogs fault
LeeMeadfan
So sorry to hear this Could you put some sort of fencing on top of the wood store to prevent them being able to actually get on to it?
coco
Sorry about your loss. Could you block the woodstore off or make it less accessible to your girls. Chickens will only usually fly up high if they have a launch pad.
Patricia W
Can you put some netting up?
Stella14
Are their wings clipped? They don't seem to jump very high when that is done. Perhaps they wouldn't be able o get up on the wood store?
the bradley bunch
http://www.purrfectfence.co.uk/products.asp could you try having a 'cat proofer' installed along the top of the fence so the chooks can't jump on it? i imagine the same principle applies as it does for cats so it will be safe & effective, although i can't speak from personal experience. i got this link from a friend who has one for her cats. ps. sorry to hear about eggburta hope u & the rest of the girls are doing ok xox
Chortle Chook
Poor silly Eggburta How very sad. Can you put a plank or similar across the top of the wood pile that juts out on all sides, so that if another hen goes up she meets a bit going across the top of her head and can't get any further up? It is the sort of thing that is used to stop rats climbing up things.
LauraJ
Thank you all for your lovely comments and help Their wings are clipped, but I think all the bits and bobs we have stored by the fence made a sort of chicken ladder - we just never thought they would want to go up there. It has all been moved now and an indepth inspection of the entire garden has taken place. Fingers crossed no more climbing. We also have a new hen, Benedict, who loves a cuddle. Thank you again
