I went to let the hens out today and the handle on the Eglu go wouldnt turn. The hens were getting impatient - I was getting stressed as OH had gone to work and ES not dressed. I had put sacking over it last night but suspect a cat or fox had knocked it off.

1Can I use boiling water or will it run into Eglu

2 can I use a squirt of WD40 or will as above will it run into Eglu.

Got it open in the end by using the gas igniter thing on the rod!!!

I had the same problem, couldn't get the door open. Warm water in a spray mist worked for me. Egg port is firmly stuck. Will have to try again later.

When our eggport is frozen, it seems to work to press down on it before turning it and opening it.

I sprayed some on a couple weeks ago and haven't had a problem with both the door & the egg port.We've had some really bad ice too!

I feel your pain My run has a door on the top for access to the pop hole which was frozen solid this morning. So to let the girls out I had to open the end door of the run, climb inside and open the pop hole. The hens seemed a bit surprised to see me and wouldn't come out until I had gone out of the run which took some considerable time as I contorted myself backwards out of the narrow doorway (and what's the betting the neighbours were looking this morning?).

Didnt fancy crawling in cos of the pooh situation and the site of me with a broom trying to push it open from the back freeked them out - must have looked like a witch to them. I might try a spray of WD - just didnt want to poison them

I went to let my girls out this morning and the eglu door mechanism had frozen solid and would not shift. Frantic clucking was coming from inside so I tried to open the side door to use this as an emergency escape hatch and this was frozen too!

Eventally I managed to get everything sorted with the aid of a kettle and release my desperate chooks but how is everyone managing this issue please?

Mine hasn't been a problem at all. The eglu door hasn't even slightly frozen so has been the same as always to open. The egg hatch freezes a bit, but a slight tug and its normal. Maybe it's just a lot colder where you are!!

been out WD'd and hopefully will do trick also put sacking over handle in the hope it doesnt get moved.

Went to shut them in for night only to fine they had kicked Auboise in the doorway and it had frozen. Tried a bit of boiled water and a stick and eventually got it working. cursed myself for not checking it earlier - this is what happens when the chickens revolt

Thanks for the WD tips - have done this and also pegged industrial strength bubble wrap over the top - OH suggested car deicer spray but I suspect he is just trying to poisen them so he doesn't have to get involved!

I have a large clear tarp which is over most of the eglu and the run, which is only 1 metre as they free range during the day. Had no difficulties with the eggport door or flap. Also means the snow cannot get on the handles.

Hurrah - bubble wrap and wd worked a treat - next problem will be finding the eglu under the snow!

I feel your pain 3 days running I have had to pull push bring out the kettle wd40 you name it to open the eggport on my which is currently home two 2 christmas holiday visitors while there mummy & daddy are baking in the sun the actual eglu door to let them out has been fine but that blooming eggport door Grrrrr

I leave the door open - they have a hopper for pellets in the eglu run and I refresh the water when I get up in the morning - they are never shut in now - and it was minus 11.6 last night or rather this morning so prob colder during the night but they are cosy

The Go back door seems too big for the Eglu which appears to have shrunk - devil of a job to close door - any advice please - do they shrink in snow?
