Fraudulent use on my credit card

Recommended Posts

I just happened, purely by chance,to log on to my M&S Mastercard account, which I have not done for months.

I found 4 payments, all on the same day,all for the same amount of £20,to various mobile phone providers for top-ups

To be honest,as M&S Mastercard have been driving me mad with their constant checking that my monthly eBay payment is valid (they stop it & check it every month, despite me telling them its fine, taking me through reams of security each time), I am amazed that this use didn't ring instant alarm bells for them

So thats a blocked card for me,with a new one on the way, quickly I hope

I know what you mean about the reams of security questions! Had my card stopped yesterday, in the middle of buying OHs main present! Luckily I had a card for another account that I could use. Had to ring the bank this morning - there has been some 'unusual' activity on my card lately so they stopped it as a precaution! Duh! Yes - it's christmas! I don't spend like this the rest of the year! The transactions that roused their suspicians were when I had two trips to the cinema last week - I obviously don't go often enough!

Quick update - I have only had my new card a month or so,& they have stopped it again.

It seems that because I had fraud on my old card I am not hot listed as someone who will be stung by fraud again.

The CC company told me outright that they cannot guarantee that my new new card will not be stopped in another 6 weeks

I went through each & every recent transaction with them & there was nothing suspicious there at all....in fact I haven't really used it much!

While I admire their thoroughness,I am a bit peeved,as it means setting up the card on various sites again, changing the PIN & activating it again............& possibly again in 6 weeks time.

I might just have to get a different card instead :?:?

I couldn't use my card over the phone last week, so tried to phone the bank to find out why. Useless, as they wouldn't talk to me unless I answered a whole host of telephone banking security questions - which I failed as I have never used this particular card for telephone banking before. I use it for internet banking but, no, the questions are not the same!

I eventually found out that they had issued me with a new card ( for security reasons) but had sent it to our OLD address so obviously had not received it. Still trying to get to the bottom of why they sent it there, as all the correspondence I've had from them for the last 4 years has been to this address!

Have you bought anything on the Lush website with it?

I have had to stop all my cards.

Yes,before Christmas,& that accounted for the fraud on my old card which was stopped.

But not since then - they cannot tell me why they think there MIGHT be fraudulent use on my new card, other than I had had fraudulent use on my old card,so therefore I will again

I am beyond livid now.....................

Got my new card today.............and it blooming well expires at the end of MARCH :twisted::twisted:

Do these people think I have nothing better to do than swap pins, activate cards & set up payments all day long?

Can anyone recommend a good credit card company for me to swap to?

I am preparing for this feeling :-(

Last week I was subject to a phishing scam, all my online passwords changed, paypal etc. So I know someone has been watching me log into my online banking etc. Then whilst cleaning the car, someone stole my bank card and tom tom whilst i popped the hoover back in the house, so I cancelled it immediately. And then this morning and email from canada, thank you for your order $375 is being drawn from your credit card (a different one). I really don't know what to do - luckily i check my emails all the time so I am getting all this pretty much asap but im worried im gonna find debts in my name and don't really know what I can do.

Gosh Ste, how awful. You'll just have to keep a really close eye on your bank statements, e-mails etc and also it might be a good idea to periodically check your credit file (Experian etc). It's usually about £2 a time to check youe file, but worth it for the peace of mind knowing that if someone has taken out anything in your name you will spot it sooner rather than later.

I agree, definitely worth an Experian check. Did you report the theft to the police?

When my cards were stolen a few years ago I was amazed to discover that all the mobile phone companies etc have large full-time fraud departments because it's such a common thing. They can put a marker on any debts in your name to show that they are not your responsibility, and so that your credit record is not affected.

Yes I can, as a credit card shark I regularly swap my cards around to get the best deal so I've a fair bit of experience of the various company's customer service. Whilst someone else may come along to say different I can not recommend Virgin Credit Card enough... they have been fab with me and regularly send me offers on rates for purchases or transfer balances.

I too would be livid in your position; I would expect them to be able to do far more. Every credit company has this issue and they should be experienced in dealing with such problems. Surely it is feasible to alter your new card details to such an extent that there is no similarity with the inital problem card (similar to a new account) I think you would be within your rights to ask for some compensation from them for the inconvenience, whilst they will say they are protecting you it shouldn't be to such an extent that the account is virtually unusable

:shock::shock::shock::shock::shock::shock::shock::shock:

They have now frozen my replacement replacement card, which has never even been used, because of 'suspected fraud'.

I am at a total loss - am now stuck with no way to pay for an Ocado delivery tomorrow,& am too sick to get to the supermarket (or get there to work!)

Complete Muppets. How can there be suspected fraud on an unused card?

I'd be inclined to cancel my credit card with them as obviously they is a problem with their security for this to happen on a brand new unused card, and take out one with a new company. I would have no faith what so ever with that credit card company. We had fraudulent activity on our business account a few years ago, and it turned out to be someone who worked there  Are you able to call them or are you feeling too ill to even contemplate that? I hope you get it sorted out soon.

Have done

Man,it felt gooood!

Have applied for an interim Virgin card,& will get a JL Partnership card when I can get back into work & collect the relevant form.

Its a shame - I really enjoyed my M&S reward vouchers arriving, but I guess JL ones will be just fine.

I had this problem with Egg Money - I've never had any fraudulent activity but they seem to have it in their heads that I'm a potential target, so if I buy anything over £200 or so, I always get an automated phone call asking me to confirm. Oddly, it's genuine.

I've mentioned this time and time again to them but Egg do seem to like harassing me. Curiously I pay my card off in full every month. Perhaps I'm not an ideal customer?
