Where to buy woodchip?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone got any ideas where I can get reasonably priced woodchip from. I've tried all my local tree surgeons, one promised me he would drop a load of for free, that was two weeks ago and I haven't heard anything since. I've tried Flytes of fancy but it was £120.00 delivery. i just wondered if anyone knew of anywhere else that sells it.

Thanks.

Keep trying lots of local tree surgeons - generally they drop off when they are passing your house and it is not out of their way...

The best success I have had is when I notice a tree surgeon working in the area I just pull over and ask them if they would like to drop the wood chip off at our house afterwards = for a cup of tea!

just be warned though I did this once with a lovely bunch of lads and we ended up sitting in so that we could catch them to ask them to stop bringing it around - 18 van loads were delivered! Can't complain though we have used most of it and given lots away to other local chicken keepers!

IN fact that reminds me - we are running low again......

Once you have found the right surgeon and you tip with the tea and biscuits you will normally get a lifetime supply.

(if you are female it helps when asking to play the damsel in need card - if you are male try and find a female to do the asking!!!)

Hello.

Just to say I buy mine from my lovely local supplier at Newland, Malvern (without whom I would be truly stuck). When she ran out for the first time recently, I used B & Q. I have to say the cost is similar from both but B & Q are 20-25 miles away in each direction. I did look at Flytes too but it was £45 for delivery, so B & Q it was.

I know some people on the forum have found B & Q pre-ordering to be a bit cumbersome in that you have to order for pickup the next day. It's not like going to Argos! True to form my order was not ready when I went to collect it. But it only took them ten minutes to sort out, they were extremely apologetic and very polite. Nice to know they provide a back up.

However ... I put it in the garage and it has frozen solid :wall: . I have a tiny kitchen and can't bring it in to dry four bags overnight. Anyone got any suggestions for best way to dry out woodchip? Seems odd to me to buy it then put it down damp - or is that OK? Hope it was all right to alter the subject.

Happy New Year and good luck with the woodchip,

Mrs P.

We use B&Q but it's all too often that we find the bark chippings are soaking wet, even if they're INSIDE the store; also it's surprisingly often seem to have some sort of spores all over them (and I certainly don't want to kill my hens! :? )

Next year I'll try calling our local council to see if any of the local parks have bark chippings they want rid of.
