maxwell17
Our normally very active, healthy star layer (9 month old Rhode Island Red) has become visibly out of sorts. She is presenting tail and head down, lethargic manner and is not her usual social self. She sounds a little croaky but there is nothing wrong with her 'vent' (soft and warm) and she is not discharging anything unusual from either her 'vent' or beak. Her eyes and nose also appear to be clear and in full working order. She has laid an egg today but now is hid up in her eglu refusing to come out. Our other 2 are agitated and are shouting although they appear to be otherwise fit and well. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!
jimnpaula
Is there any chance she's been attacked by anything? Also have a look at this thread: viewforum.php?f=41 P
JanTheDiver
One of my Rhodies did this when she was moulting, does she show any signs of this? I would have thought she was too young to have a moult this year. Hope she picks up soon, but worth keeping an eye on her and if she gets worse get a vet to look at her. maxwell17
Thanks for the reply, but i dont think so. The garden is very secure with 3 cats on guard for anything, plus i have been home all day. The one that is ill is the dominant hen so i dont think its mutiny or anything like that either. I'll check ot the link you sent me. (the cats are scared of the chickens so i wont be them). Thanks
Tweety
If she is sounding croaky, she may have a respiratory infection of some kind and I would get her to the vet asap. Hope she picks up.
maxwell17
Her breathing isnt so much croaky as laboured. I dont know what this means as these are my first chickens and i'm a bit of a 'newby'.
Plum
Would still go to vet. Put your ear to her back and listen, you may hear a wheeze or crackles as she breathes. Or she could have canker. If you lift her head up and look in her throat there may be lesions.
maxwell17
Thank-you for all the helpful replies but sadly we have lost our first chicken. We're now down our star layer and a great-charactered chicken. RIP Margot.
