Big fat gypsy weddings

Recommended Posts

I felt so sad after watching the episode this week. The poor little girl (sister of the one getting married) my heart went out to her. She really didn't want to have to do all the cleaning and washing. Where is her mum? Why is she not doing it? I hate doing the housework but its my house and my kids, I don't expect them to have to do it.

Do they take the girls out of school at the age of 12 because of supposed outside influences or is it just because they want to use them for the housework and realise that the longer they stay with 'other' children the more they would rebel about having to do things like housework and being subservient to men?

It just feels all wrong. I felt very sorry for Bridget too. I think she would have been happy to stay with her mum and she didn't look overly happy getting married.

Read the book Gypsy Boy if you want to get the perspective of a male it's not easy reading he is subject to massive abuse all for being 'different' until he runs away and even then they keep hunting him!!

OMG thank you for this recommendation. I downloaded it to my kindle on Sunday and couldn't put it down. I have now finished it and really really loved the book. I agree that its not easy reading but it was so compelling, interesting and fascinating to read about their culture. I am so glad I have read it. Thank you

I just got very angry when watching the bits I saw. I didn't want to watch but DH did and baby feeding pins you down.

I get wound up hearing that it is tradition and culture and how they have high morals.

Rubbish it's misogyny at it's highest. They aren't morals, they're rules that have come from a patriarchy trying to keep their women down. Hence the no schooling etc. If there were such high morals then the men wouldn't be 'going with' gorgio women. Give the girls no escape route and then they have few choices. The women don't know any different.

The few divorces that do happen tend to be girls who have married slighty later and have worked previous to marriage. Do the marriages fail because of having been corrupted by outside world or is it actually because the girls have realised that they don't have to put up with it.

As for the grabbing, which can be tantamount to assault, is that the boy who does it is then supposed to marry that girl. Thats the last person I would want to marry if I were her.

I have to say that I agree with bronze !

No idea why fake tan and massively expensive dresses etc can be "traditional" they certainly weren't what the gypsies I saw as a kid in Oxfordshire were like.

I think this must just be tabloid TV at its worst and probably annoys as many proper gypsies as it does other people.
