Oh my poor sickly Bonnie. Advice please.

Recommended Posts

I've posted before about this but am still in a pickle about it.

Bonnie has basically been sick since we got her and god knows how long before that.

She was ok for a while just an occasional sneeze here and there at first then

bubbly eyes. My research led me to believe it was Myco....

We took her to our normal vet but they are not specialist In chooks.

Now followed a 14 day Bayril treatment.... No improvement really.

We've tried all sorts of natural things but she's just not getting better and it's been about 3 months-ish now.

She has a puffy red yellowy face but the bubbly eyes have mostly gone and very occasional sneeze still.

She's withdrawn compared to the others but still wanders around foraging a bit then sits down and looks

sickly/puffed up and so on. It's like it turns on and off.

She always runs over to see me with gusto but is also quite shy and I think this sickness has something to do with that too.

So (sorry for the long post!) The vets near me can't get Tylan in for various reasons and the

specialist vets I've found in London want to charge me an absolute fortune to treat her!! It cost £65

last time to treat the 3 chooks.... all the avian vets want to charge me between £60-£70 for a consultation

then meds on top for just her! Ah!!!

I really really want to see her better but I feel like there's no guarantee it will work anyway and

I don't drive so will have to get a lift from someone too.

Can anyone think of an alternative? Or has anyone been in a similar position?

I just don't know how far to go or how much she is actually suffering....

I know you can send off dropping samples to someone, does this work for Myco?

Perhaps that would be better?

Eurg... help. It's so depressing.

Sorry no advice with those symptoms but....

why don't you ring retords and see if they can test for anything with her symptoms.?

they will send out meds too.(after testing)

also have you looked for forum recommended vets... you may be surprised and a good vet is not tooo far.

Someone from London travelled to a good vet near the M3 in west end/bisley.

Sometimes it is worth the drive and petrol to see a good vet that will not fleece you.

Have you tried ringing round all yor local vets from the Yewllow pages. I did this when Coco was ill and found a vet not too far away that knows about poultry. Coco was ill for a couple of months and despite several courses of antibiotics I had to tdo my best for her and had her PTs in the end. Hope you can get someone to treat your girls for you. The vet I went to did say he would get Tylan in for me but it wouldn't be cheap.

You could try contacting the Royal Vetinary College. I think they are in North London. Not sure if they see chickens themselves but may be able to recommend someone.

Two Tylan injections 3 days apart are good for mycoplasma. If your vet will write you a prescription Retfords may be able to supply.

Does your hen have a distinctive (nasty) smell? If so that might indicate infectious coryza.

Good luck. I really hope you can get this sorted.

Thanks for that everyone, no nasty smell (just chickeny!)

Her face is not actually crusty just a bit swollen and yellowish, the thing that bothers me is she

did have bubbly eyes before so I'm worried the myco is still lingering, although i've not seen bubbles for some time.

I've got some natural anti biotics so am going to give that one last shot just incase the last

lot of Baytril actually got rid of the myco and she's just got another infection from a lowered immune defence.

She's not seriously suffering and has been lively since the weather warmed up so maybe there's hope

before vet time, after that I'll just take her wherever I think!

Oh dear, no better I'm afraid.

I'm just going to bite the bullet and take her to the vets again. I don't know what I'll do If she doesn't

improve after that.

She's looking a bit ropey. Her feathers are dull and she gets dirtier than the others.

I feel for her so much, I wonder if she's ever been well.

Thank you everyone.
