mollyripkim
I am in a right panic, three of my girls had one really long toe nail which was beginning to curl over, did two with no problems but Henrietta's started to bleed. I am shaking and really scared and don't know what to do, she is on my lap now as I am frightened the others will peck it. Any ideas on how to stop it bleed? and should I separate her in case they peck it? Thank you so much.
Mr Rhode Island Red
ok I dunno if this will work, If the nail starts bleeding, stop trimming and stop the bleeding with silver nitrate or styptic pencil. Got this from a backyard chickens forum hope it helps
mollyripkim
Unfortunately I haven,t got either of those, searched on here and someone suggested flour, have dipped her nail in that but it's still bleeding but not so much. She is back outside FR and seems ok and the others haven,t noticed yet. Not sure if I should put her in a box with soft bedding to give it a chance to stop? Egluntyne
Corn flour or soap rubbed onto the area should work.
mollyripkim
Hi, thanks for your reply so quick, I have just washed her feet in warm salty water which bizarrely she seemed to really enjoy. Guess that was a bit silly really as of course it started to bleed again but at least it's clean. Hubby has just gone off to get some blue food colouring, a bar of soap and some Vaseline. Should I put Vaseline on the end of the nail to protect it? Feel so guilty for doing this but the claw in question sort of curls round on itself so doesn,t wear down. Poor little henrietta I hope she will be ok.
Egluntyne
I'd just use the soap at this stage.
Falkor
Eglutyne is spot on. The soap should stop the bleeding enough to allow it to clot.
mollyripkim
Ok thank you so much, I'll use the soap when hubby gets back.
mollyripkim
Just checked and she had blood down her own front so must have been pecking at it, have cleaned her up and put some blue food colouring on her front. They are back in their run, others don,t seem to have noticed. Have done the soap thing again. Any other suggestions welcome.
mollyripkim
Thankfully just been out to check the girls, all snuggled up together, no more blood on henrietta and the nail looks normal. I am so relieved, I have 2 grown up kids, three dogs etc but get sooo worried about the chicks, they just seem so dependant and fragile at times. Redwing
If you just take the tip off the nail then use a metal nail file next time it should be ok
