Patricia W
My dodgy right knee has been condemned and I've been recommended a part knee replacement. Apparently, it lasts 10-15 years and I should get almost perfect movement back with it but it will take some months. I was told that a full knee replacement isn't recommended until it's a final resort as it can't be re-done very easily. Now, I'm lucky in that it is covered by my firm's medical insurance so I can choose when to have it done. As I'm off to Australia to visit grandchildren in March and can't have it done till at least 2 weeks after I'm back, I was thinking mid April. My concern is that I can get into a pair of (lowish) heels in time for DD's wedding at the end of August. Anyone had one? ( although I know how young you all are...... ) Mind you, I was chuffed when the consultant told me "It's very unusual to see so much damage in one so young..."! C&T
2 relatives have recently had knee ops - both were full replacements though for one reason or another. And while both struggled for a little bit afterwards (early days as it heals) they have both never looked back, and were so glad they had it done. Seeing what pain they were in before the surgery, and the improvement afterwards makes me say go for the Op when you are back from Aus - even if you can't get into heeled shoes for the wedding, there are some gorgous flat sandals that could work for you instead, and the sooner it is done, the sooner you will get the benefit! Patricia W
I'm an expert on arthroscopy's! That's usually the first thing they do. In my case, both knees were done- one 5 years ago and the other 3 years ago. It's actually the one done 3 years ago which has deteriorated more quickly than the other. Main problem I have now is finding a pain relief regime which works till I can have the part-replacement. I've tried Naproxen but it makes me feel ill all over - so any suggestions welcome! chelsea
FIL had both knees replaced last year. He was in a pretty bad way beforehand as he was/still is a plasterer all his life so spent a lot of time on those legs! The ops went very well and he seemed to make a quick recovery afterwards, it gave him a new lease of life - he walked for miles. Although OH and I have both noticed a year on he's started to limp again and is not quite as agile as he was (this may be due to age?!) but we think he went a bit OTT straight after the op with too much walking and exercise. So if you do decide to go for it, take it easy post op.
