Passport question

Recommended Posts

My YD is getting married in May and it occurred to me today that she needs to get her passport changed to her new name. I know that you can get this done in advance of the wedding but as it is essentially a new passport that is issued it will cost £77 and she just does not have that sort of cash spare at the moment.

My query is - is it OK to book plane tickets to Spain in her maiden name as that will match her passport. I know that you can't travel with a different passport name to that on the ticket so both would have to be in either her maiden or married name but I am concerned that it might be illegal to use her maiden name after the wedding?

I am probably just worrying over nothing as many people don't even take their husband's surname any more but presumably you have to use whatever is on the legal register?

Provided that your daughter has a valid passport and a valid visa to get in or out of the country if a visa is required, then there will be no problem provided that the name on the travel tickets match exactly her name on her passport.

If you think about it, when she presents her tickets and passport to the check-in desk providing the names match then there is not going to be a problem. The airline is not interested if you are married or not, all they need is possitive i.d. who is traveling with them. The name in her passport is the name she was born with so until her passport runs out, why change it? The airline does not have access to any databases that will flag up someone's maiden name as now being married. For piece of mind she could pack her marrige licence with her.

Why not call the airline she will be traveling with just to confirm the above.

My friend flew after she got married still using her maiden name on the passport and tickets. She's still using her maiden name now, so I don't think there is a legal obligation to change it as soon as you've got married.

I also can't understand why it is so expensive to renew passports. £77 is an outrageous amount of money to charge.

Can't answer that, but I am renewing all our passports at the moment,at £77 a throw!

It seems a massive amount of money for a document to be renewed,to me.

Even worse, I've got to renew two of the kids passports, £49 each, and they expire every five years  It's just not right to charge that amount :wall:

I didn't change my name from my maiden name (his suggestion not mine, perhaps alarm bells should have rung then!) so my passport remained the same. I can't see it being a problem as others have said, so long as her travel details match what is on her passport. It only becomes a problem once she has changed bank details, and hence bookings will need to match her credit card details so then her passport must be in the same name too......

She can have more than one name and is not legally obliged to change anything once she marries - as long as she is not doing it for fraudulent purposes.

I still work in my maiden name, so pay tax, NI etc in that name. My driving licence is also in my maiden name.

Other than that I use my married name so my married surname is on bank accounts, bills an even my passport.

Nothing illegal in that.

In answer to your question she can book an fly in her maiden name but as mentioned above the tickets and passport must match. I married abroad and travelled there and back in my maiden name.

I never changed my name (just as well, as I've now been divorced for a good few years!)

That was 25 years ago, and I was really amazed at how many people told me that I would have to change it, or that I could use my maiden name for professional purposes but would 'have' to be known as Mrs X at other times, or that I was wrong to keep my own name and that it showed a lack of commitment! I took great delight in telling them where to get off. My OH didn't mind at all, and I can honestly say that it had nothing to do with the marriage not working out.

As stated above, it's not illegal to have more than one name - the issue is whether you are using another name for illegal purposes.

You don't HAVE to change your name - there is no legal requirement to do so!

I changed back to my maiden name and have gradually changed most things except my passport - I haven't used it so am not going to pay until I do!

Personally I think you should keep the name you are born with !

The important thing is that the names on the passport and tickets are consistent.

I didn't change my name and the only place I've had to in 20+ years for convenience is the dentist  They couldn't seem to link me with the kids for appointments with different names although they did link OH with them so I was tempted to leave him to that job

I travelled on honeymoon many years ago (25) in my maiden name did feel a bit odd at the time but had no problems. Wouldn't have wanted to keep my maiden name,I was old fashioned in that i wanted people who saw me with my kids to know i was married , i was proud to be married. It doesn't have the same importance now :( Also i hate my maiden name and never want it back
