8) I am so jealous we had canal boat holidays for years and did most of the canals.

Then we had a small 30ft narrowboat when the kids were young. It was marine ply and looked like a galleon, figurehead and all. Had to give it up when they got bigger the engine came out of the water if everyone was at the front of the boat

We had many happy sunday afternoons up and down the midlands canals - chippy at bridge 58 on the Trent and Mersey :D

Just love the peace and being outside seeing the wildlife, countryside and middle of towns and cities and the frantic moments when you get to a lock or series of locks.

Which one are you on this time?

I'm a big fan!

I'm lucky to have the use of a narrow boat just about whenever I want! OH and I make a point to use it for at least one week a year plus a few weekends. It used to be moored at Calcut, near Napton, so we've been all around the canals in that area. It's moored near Nantwich now, we went to Llangollen last year. Lovely trip! There are a series of meres near Ellesmere on the way to Llangollen. Really beautiful spot.

It's so relaxing, and you see the countryside from a perspective that you wouldn't usually.

We plan to do the Cheshire ring this year, but it may be September before we get around to it.

Deeply jealous Sammiboo, we have been 3 times and absolutely love it! My OH loved it so much he joined Waterways Recovery Group and spent a week sleeping on the floor in a church hall and bricklaying etc.

We love Marmite, you will be fine - I have horrendous motion sickness on anything other than my own two feet I can't even go on a swing, and I am the worst on boats and I was fine. As there is virtually no flow on a canal, it really is just like travelling in a car doing about 5 miles an hour. You will love it!

Would love to live on a canal boat for a year - someone on another forum lived on a canal boat with chickens! Had an eglu in the bow, and stashed the run on the roof, and when they moored, put both on the verge of the towpath.

Paradise! :D

We've just booked the Four Counties Ring for a holiday too, we're going the first week in August.

I've been on a canal holiday once before, 5 years ago and i can't say that i was overwhelmed but the kids and OH are desperate to do this so i've caved. Using the last of my Tesco clubcard vouchers for this as there's no way we could afford it otherwise. There'll be the full Mac family plus the ED's boyfriend.... cozy.

Four counties!

I really enjoy it. Its very addictive. I like the easy goingness of the canals but then the buzz you get when you see a lock coming up.

Welovemarmite - i would be surprised if you were motion sick from a canal boat. I have been on a couple of cruises and the motion is slight and i have been really ill from it but the canal doesnt affect me at all.

Cannot wait. Will be great to take our own eggs with us too!

my boyfriend (and i occasionally) work one weekend a month to help restore the montgomery canal which is just off the llangollen canal and runs passed our house. If you go on the llangollen canal its worth going on the monty.

pics of the monty - just a few steps from my front door lovely canal
