Snoxy
Hi Has anyone hired a drop door skip to get rid of their chicken run waste...mostly rotted/damp straw and poo? I am in Dunstable, Bedfordshire area. Thank you
JM
I tend to compost mine (although I use Aubiose and not straw) - or if I have a glut (!) I advertise on Freecycle. Jill
The Dogmother
If I were you, I'd save my money, bag it up and put it on Freecycle - people fight for the bags of chicken waste when I clean out the run!
Willow
Can't you give it away ? Freegle or put a notice up at your local allotments, note into your local garden club etc. With people just getting back into gardening it should go easily. I know Cinnamon regularly gives away surplus on our local freegle group. Mine all goes into one of the 5 compost heaps and turns the kitchen and garden waste to 'Geoff Hamilton' level compost Skips are so expensive and such a waste to dump such great compost accelerator
Egluntyne
I give mine away to allotmenteers.
Snoxy
Thank you... Just looked up my local freecycle...just wondering what you advertise your chicken waste as...mine is mostly old straw with chicken droppings too.
The Dogmother
Just list it as chicken manure, that'll do the trick. Mine is taken away by friends with lotties - I just ring them up and leave it outside in sacks.
Snoxy
Thank you I don't have any friends with allotments as far as I know I guess rubble sacks are pretty strong...so will get a supply of those Will start digging asap and put my ad on Freecycle Thank you everyone for your suggestions
The Dogmother
If you use Aubiose, then the sacks from that are ideal
Snoxy
Put an ad on my local Freecycle and got my first taker for manure
migsy
I've loaded up my green (garden waste) bin with it and the Council has taken it away.
Ain't Nobody Here
We had a notice with new dates for bin collections from our Council recently. It now says animal bedding isn't not allowed . I give my excess to my neighbours .

Jools
I think it depends where you are. I can't give it away because it's very rural here and anyone who wants manure really is spoiled for choice. Fortunately I can use most of mine on the garden and when I've got too much (usually late summer-early winter when I'm using my aviary for chicks and growers) I hide it in the brown bin between the layers of green waste that I don't have room to compost because I'm too busy composting chicken run waste. migsy
I doubt the bin men in Manchester would know it was chicken waste. Not many chooks around here. And yes, I also cover it with some plant matter.
Barkisland
We compost ours, and bag any surplus up to take to mum in law's. She grows loads of tomatoes in the summer and sells them at her gate for charity - apparently the tomatoes have been incredible since using our girl's gifts. Chicken poo is marvellous stuff - MIL calls it 'hen gold'.

Jools
So in a roundabout kind of way ...... where there's muck, there's brass!
The Dogmother
I guess so; A friend had people up at her stables yesterday, shovelling horse manure into sacks. They even offered to pay her for it; she's just glad to have the midden go down a bit.
Jools
I used to wander round the field adjoining our old house with a wheel barrow and spade collecting horse muck for the compost heap. I only had five bantams in those days though.

scarlettohara
Got someone coming who wants as much as he can fit in his car I will be mainly shovelling you know what for the next few days - I have a huge mountain to bag up I hope people realise there is straw and shavings in it as well
Sam
I hope people realise there is straw and shavings in it as well I thought that! Wouldn't want people to be disappointed because my sacks of "chicken poo" is actually mainly wood shavings. I'm sure its still a good fertilizer though
