Mr & Mrs Fruit & Veg box

I

In some professions, like teaching, Mr or Ms/Miss/Mrs are still used and some teachers may prefer to keep their marital status their private business.

When i worked in mainstream i was always called Miss even after i was married

The students i work with now all call me by my first name except one who calls me 'Blondie-locks'

Because no-one else has said it, I would like to state that I am really proud to be 'Mrs John Smith' and to receive letter addressed to 'Mr & Mrs J Smith'. We are a couple and I am his wife and I really like that. I belong to him and he belongs to me. :D

:D:D:D:D:D

Actually Ginette, I'm glad you said that, because I've been lurking, feeling slightly ashamed of my delight at being called 'Mrs B Chookiehen', given the general feeling on this thread. Our bank accounts, mortgage, council tax etc are all in the names 'Mr & Mrs B Chookiehen', because we are a couple - we stood in a church and took our vows to become a partnership for life, so why shouldn't our public status show this? Similarly, if a same sex couple have stood and taken vows, why shouldn't they be allowed to have the same status?

I think this is all down to personal choice - so long as everyone can choose how they like to be addressed everyone should be happy (although I can see why it becomes difficult for those trying to address people they are not familiar with!). If I married my OH I would gain a rather unusual surname so I would probably go down the "this is my surname, don't giggle, just accept it" route but think I would like to be Mrs Lorna W as opposed to Mrs B W....again, just my personal preference :D

My initial irritatation was having to choose from a very biased list and not being able to be just Jaime xxxx and then realising that you could choose a range of M/F couplings (some of which looked a bit silly) but I couldnt have my partnership recognised.

It's academic - we might own our house in joint name, but we wouldnt, as most M/F couples wouldnt, buy our veg in joint name. :?

I do think you are straining at gnats here. Why not just have the box addressed to one of you? (Everything in my house comes to me!)

Think how much worse it is to lose your name completely, as a woman does. I don't even have a first name any more (married women only become Mrs Jane Smith instead of Mrs John Smith if they get divorced). (I particularly hate getting birthday cards addressed in the "Mrs John Smith" style.)

Shortly after getting married I won £50 on the Premium Bonds (great excitement, as I only had three bonds so wasn't very hopeful). When I went to pay the cheque in, my bank refused it because it was made out in my maiden name. I had been with this branch of the bank with my maiden name for 15 years, but this brought it home to me that I had completely lost my "real" name.

And people always ask me if I am Welsh, as if I have taken on my husband's nationality as well as his name!

Re titles Mr & Mrs/Ms/Miss: they are disappearing, but they can be useful. There are so many people with foreign names in this country now that I find it awkward not knowing in advance whether someone is a man or a woman.

OH works for an international company. Forms have to be translated into several different languages to accommodate the different countries.

Recently he had a form translated into various languages and the one from Hungary came back incomplete. The translator hadn't translated Mr/Miss/Mrs etc. So OH contacted them to ask what it should be and was told there was no Hungarian equivalent. In Hungary they don't use titles at all, they haven't even got any to use!

I still get things addressed to Mrs T*****, despite changing EVERYTHING when I got divorced. I kept my married surname as it was easier than changing it all back again  I was married when I moved up here, so no-one in this area remembers my maiden name.

One aunt still insists on addressing everything to Mrs T*****; apparently, because I have a child, I can't possibly be a Miss!

Gallina, interestingly, there was an incident after the Kings Cross fire when a poor lady widowed by the event found that EVERYTHING was in her husband's name - she had no access to any funds whatsoever, or even any right to remain in the house. That stayed in my mind when I got married and I insisted that everything joint had my name on it too. I kept my own bank account too - no joint one.

I changed everything to my new name on marriage, as I couldn't cope with having two surnames for different occasions. I didn't mind doing this too much: when people get married and have children, one of the names has to go.

But I don't think I thought through all the implications. (I did get my £50 Premium Bond prize eventually, but only after sending Ernie a photocopy of my marriage certificate.)

I feel slightly jealous, however, that men keep the same names throughout: it is so much easier for them to trace old male friends. I have no idea what my long-lost female friends are now called.

I remember having horrible problems with our Honeymoon.

I had booked tickets in our married names, but stupidly forgot that my passport was still in my maiden name & couldn't be changed without the marriage certificate

In the end we had to have a photocopy of the certificate & my birth certificate to prove that I had changed names. It caused a lot of problems at the check-in even so :roll::roll:

Luckily some confetti had got stuck between the pages of my passport & fluttered out when the check in guy opened it. He was VERY camp ("Oooooooo- confetti!!!") & they eventually waved us through
