I'd like to just add that, as someone who has been through training with a international food and drink chain as well, that curry on the menu almost always disguises meat that is slightly past it's best.....

Sorry, can we rewind a bit?

I can't let it go ...

And if i were you, I would NEVER buy loose grapefruit from the supermarket.

Shona you have to explain - pleeeeeaaaase!

But I agree about supermarkets. Only trouble is OH thinks that if there is a gap in the fridge then only Tesco can fill it. Obviously you cannot buy fridge items from anywhere else!

On my first night at work in stock control (where every little helps), I came across 2 cases of grapefruit that were 2 MONTHS past their sell-by date. When I approached a member of the produce department he said 'you can't tell with grapefruit - they look just as good 3 months down the line'

While i could have vouched for the dates on the grapefruit in my store when i worked for them, sadly the opinion of the produce boys is one that is shared throughout...

Thanks for that - Woolies pick'n mix was one of my favourites as a child!:?:vom:

You're welcome Snowy  .....Another friend worked as a student during the hols at the Robertson's Jam factory...I think it was in Gorton....Jaime will probably remember....anyway his job was to skim the dead wasps off the surface of the bubbling jam.....which was made mostly with fruit syrup and very little actual fruit!

Pick n Mix :vom: - a good case for more packaging I think :? .

I worked in a bakery when I was 15, Saturdays and holidays - my first job was to take cream out of the cream cakes and re-cream them :?

Mind you, the bakery sold out to MuckD's - not sure which is worse!

This topic is making me feel quite ill now (despite the fact I've contributed quite alot of it..!)

In my younger days, I worked as a stock control manager for a very large brewery, and I once killed a rat (by pure chance) when I dropped a keg on it during a stocktake in a particularly filthy city centre pub...

And don't even get me started on what gets put back into certain cask-conditioned ales at the end of the night.:shock::shock::shock:

*whispers*

NEVER have a pint of cask 80/- or 70/-

I thought the programme was very eye opening indeed!

It didnt tell me anything i didnt already suspect but it was shocking all the same - just added to the confirmation that home cooked is always best

The ready made meals at that place in London was just gross :vom: the floor was swimming in food and not changing the wellies from the toilet to the food prep area just made me gip :vom:

:roll: Well alot of this comes as now surprise to me. I personally watched the f-word, as bulls penis seemed far more appealing compared to the meat counter at supermarkets.

M and S were always very GOOD re. sell by dates etc, infact they regularly checked that no-one ate the 1 day out, cakes they supplied for the safari park - intended for animal consumption only.

In a pub I worked in we kept pints under the bar, and the drip trays would be emptied, then discreetly, you had to pull the rest of the pint ontop of the dregs :vom: . Another reason to drink bottled beveredges!!!!.

I worked in a pub and at the end of the night all the drinks left on tables and in the drip trays would go in a big bucket and then put back into the barrels of Mild

Uuuurgh

I don't think that I want to buy any food, ever , from anywhere again after reading this thread :shock:

I could add a toe curling tale from a friend of mine who had a university summer job in a yoghurt factory, but that was a long time ago and I really thought that things would have improved since then. I very, very rarely eat shop bought yoghurt though

I've now seen the programme. Was eye-opening, but hard to tell if it is widespread as they went into stores where they knew there was a problem.

I can understand if you were in a low paid job in that culture how your standards might slip. Every job has its short cuts, but it's scary how much trust you put in strangers with your food and how you presume they follow the regulations. It's scary watching people choose to break rules.

I missed it and hope I can catch it again.

I've only seen a nasty pub kitchen, I worked in the pub. It was disgusting and cloths were used for floor and work surfaces. Any complaints, the staff to spit in the food and once we had a classic fawlty towers moment. Chef on the floor pie eyed and a restaurant full of customers. By the way this pub was in a nice village and considered a good one :shock:

I left pretty smartish :wink::lol:

I don't enjoy eating out in the evening, we like a nice pub lunch when we go walking and you just hope you choose wisely :?

BBx :D
