I've been trying to work out what it was you had said! People have been moderated for using the first name of Mr Strawbridge....it's just a keen autopilot!

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Whilst we all use the word d!ck on a daily basis, as an affectionate term for Mr Strawbridge or even as the name for the vet school in Edinburgh (D!ck Vets), some unsavoury spammer types may use it for a rather different reason, so the forum swear filter will automatically **** it out. Nothing to do with the mods!

Oooh - back on thread - (but sort of in theme with the swearing!) it clashes with the F Word .....

I think I'll go with the F Word - after all I don't think Whistle Blower is going to tell me anythng I didn't already know/suspect went on and I don't eat supermarket meat anyway.

I used to work in a supermarket (recently), and I can tell you exactly what goes on.

Managers are overworked, and given unattainable targets for waste - waste is to be expected in such an environment - between products going out of date, products being damaged and shoplifting, however, every penny of waste is deducted from any surplus in a stock result, directly affecting a managers reputation. So managers spend their time drumming into staff how important it is to reduce wastage, then they disappear to deal with under-staffed checkouts, customer complaints, shop lifters, under-stocks etc.

So the staff panic when something comes near it's date on the counter, and 'roll' it - they keep selling it past it's date.

Then there is the staff who work in the produce department. They are also overworked - 3 deliveries a day (not to mention the night deliveries), all of which consist of enough produce to fill the department, plus having to go and man the checkouts, because the checkouts are short-staffed, as well as being expected to check every single product on the shelf and in the back warehouse and reduce anything that is going out of date within the next 24 hours. Not enough staff, and not enough hours in the day to do everything, so the loose produce also gets 'rolled'.

Then someone like me would come in, and spend 5 hours trying to catch all the rolled stock, reduce it, then waste any that was left at 10pm, do the stock cou nts and man the checkouts when it was busy, because the checkouts are always short-staffed.

Well this just makes their vast profits even more unpalletable in my eyes and gives me one more reason to avoid them altogether.

BTW - I don't like supermarkets - can you tell?! :wink:

The major supermarket I worked for was one of the most appalling employers I have ever heard of - one girl I worked with took 1 extra shift off after her father died (you are entitled to 1 week off, she had 1 week, 1 day) and she was told that if she was off again within 6 moths then she would lose her job. When I phoned in sick after a miscarraige (that my manager knew about), I was asked 'and what exactly does the doctor think is so wrong you need a week off?'. Then, because I had been off ill, I too was told that if I was off again within 6 months I would lose my job. Someone in my department was given a written warning for reducing 30 cases of loose apples that were 2 days passed their sell-by date.

And if i were you, I would NEVER buy loose grapefruit from the supermarket.

Well, I've never bought from the meat or fish counter in a supermarket anyway.

I dont shop at Tesco's anymore because the quality is definitely poor now imo.

The re-mincing of the meat was bad....yuk :shock:

However, mincing of past date meat is not uncommon....hubby is a fully trained butcher of 15 years and said that your local butcher could not afford to throw out beef so would mince it anyway :roll:

I don't shop at Tesco's either because they put their greedy profits over everything else including the livelihoods of farmers and the effect of their huge stores on small communities. I'm all for successful businesses and making a profit and I do think that supermarkets have their place but why do they feel the need to take over the world? :evil:
