Donna C
Hi guys, has my orpingtons for about 8 months now and moved them into wir last week. However they suddenly seem to have found their voice. We live in quite a built up area and I'm really scared someone will complain and i'll have to give my ckns away. I only have two . The problem is they BOK BOK BOK BOK at 6.30 am. Started leaving door open for them , then left corn out for them and last night even some greens but no good. Does anyone have any idea's how can stop this. Have even started using a water pistol I really don't want to loose my girls. I thought orps were quite, maybe i was wrong. Please please please help me
Poached Egg
My experience is that they are normally quiet and Our Orpington only does this occasionally so hopefully yours will do the same, you may be even surprised the neighbors dont mind or even hear them! Donna C
I really hope so, one neighbour loves them and even looks after them when we go on holiday but have one other side who are dr's but never really see them and another at bottom who don't seem too nice. I love my girls and really don't want to loose them . I'm going to try putting a blanket over them tonight?

Old Speckled Hen
Oh I'm sorry...it was just a joke I've been through letters from the council with my cockerel but he is loud. The first letter you get is to say somebody has complained. The complainant is given a diary to keep for a month. (my complainant didn't send it back because I took measures to prevent early morning crowing..... I just wish I had been approached personally) If the diary is returned then monitoring equipment is put in place for another month. At ANY time you can contact the council for somebody to visit to give you advice. I really really think you have nothing to worry about. A cockerel's crow is much much worse than a bit of gentle bokking. Relax.
percy049
We scatter my budgies seed (that she refuses to eat) instead of corn, for the same reason. It doesnt last long though
Donna C
Thankyou , you all have helped put my mind at rest. I'll try and chill abit. Will it do any harm to lay a blanket over them?My oh says it's cruel .
Old Speckled Hen
A blanket is ok but will not keep all the light out and will get sodden if it rains. In my opinion cutting down SOME light is useless. Really donna c ,please try to stop worrying. I know when you think there may be an issue the sounds of your own chooks are magnified. Plum
If you go out and give them corn it will just make them call more. I found giving them a feed of warm wet pellets last thing helped keep them quiet last year when I had a few problems and shutting the cube door. JillM
When I first got my chickens I would let them out as soon as it was light, and I'd talk to them while I was putting their food out. It was very nice but they got louder and more demanding - so now I get up just before 7, put their food out and refill the water, close up and stand back while I open the cube - and NEVER SAY A WORD. Hardly a murmur from them. It's like training a dog. If you're not careful they have you running round in circles, you have to be boss. Talking and playing comes later in the day
percy049
Ill have to try that. They usually start squawking when they see one of us at the door, wanting for treats
