Noisy Chickens

Recommended Posts

Hi there i need some advice, i had 3 goldlines. Great layers but they were squaking and screaching all of the time ususally at 5 am. I tried to do everything to keep them quiet but they were very clever and screached louder despite my following the various guides out there.

Are there any breeds out there that are quiet, docile and would not awake my neighbourhood at 5am? I was thinking of bantums but have been told they are just as noisy.

Advice would be great?

Nope.

Most breeds can be noisy at one time or another I'm afraid.

AND it's worse in the summer when it's beginning to get light at 3am.

You could try to lightproof their coop but if you exclude all light you compromise the ventilation.

My cockerel starts crowing at 4am even though he overnights in our undercroft which is pitch black :?

He sleeps in a large dog crate in our undercroft which is a part of the house buried in the ground...a sort of basement, if you like.

We can still hear him in the house although muted but it doesn't bother me, I just roll over and go back to sleep if I hear him at all.

I let him out at seven and he treads a couple of hens then has a good feed

Hi

I had a problem with my hybrid chickens and alwasy put it down to a fox or them spotting my dog at the window early hours?? But in their older age they are much more quiet. I got some bantams and although they can be sqawky I dont find them as loud! They sound like witches cackling but I dont find them so loud!

not sure what anyone else thinks Donald

Apart from egg announcements there isn't too much noise from my two, the hybrid can be a bit whingey from time to time, but the Sussex doesn't seem to make much noise at all. I feed them Mash though so that seems to keep them busy for a lot of the time

Mine were noisy very early so I now leave the eglu/cube doors open and just fasten the run up at night. I know it is a risk but I want to keep my hens and neighbours happy. Since this regime was implemented (recently due to the increased light in the morning) the hens have been much quieter and are only noisy when announcing their egg laying or there is a cat in the garden.

I have LF and bantams and the bantams are quieter but I have heard it isn't necessarily so!

Good luck.
