PeckyBeak Posted April 22, 2011 Share Posted April 22, 2011 (edited) Ellie one of my Ex-Bats, 2 Years old, has layed only softies or shell-less eggs for a few weeks and it usually takes her a while, then she is fine. She has shown the hunched up symptoms of this for a couple of days now but nothing has come out this time. She had still been eating and drinking and active for some of the time but since yesterday afternoon She has been quiet.Today she seems very tired and quite poorly. Olly Posted April 22, 2011 Share Posted April 22, 2011 If she is looking really poorly, then I'd separate her from the others - a cat-basket or similar will do, she won't be wanting to move around much. Keep her hydrated, and if she doesn't perk up (or lay a softie - she could just be in the course of doing that) then I think it's a case for the vet. If it is peritonitis, there is nothing you can do yourself; the vet may be able to drain some fluid off to make her more comfortable. Separating her from the others may make her perk up a bit, as she won't have to keep pretending she feels ok in front of them. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Dolly Posted April 23, 2011 Share Posted April 23, 2011 One of our girls had a similar problem a while ago and it turned out to be an egg shell stuck inside her - but I had noticed she'd laid the inside of the egg on it's own so suspected it could be this. We took her to the vet and he removed the shell, as it was squashed flat inside her and she couldn't pass it on her own. I know some people are able to do this themselves but I'm in no way an expert so didn't want to risk doing her any damage or making things worse. PeckyBeak Posted April 24, 2011 Author Share Posted April 24, 2011 Thanks for your replies, I gave her some Zolcal D on a bit of bread and about an hour later she went to the nest box and passed a really weird 'thing' As you can see, it was bloody with what looked like viens but had egg yolk aswell. I wondered if it was an egg that had been inside her for some time that was fertile Within 15 mins she was munching on cabbage and back to normal. How resilient they can be... PeckyBeak Posted April 26, 2011 Author Share Posted April 26, 2011 Hi all, I couldn't bring myself to cut it open at the time and dinner was imminent and I didn't want to feel I was so relieved that she had got rid of 'it' and was recovering. I later had a closer look and it was fairly thick, softish, and filled with egg yolk and blood. I can only think that it was a 'stewed egg' possibly fertilised that she had been unable to pass for a few days. She hasn't laid since but is currently in the nest box. staceychristie Posted April 26, 2011 Share Posted April 26, 2011 Gladys is poorly tonight too. She stuffs herface usually. Come bed time she was hunched up with wings droopy. I'm sure that she's been laying softs, but also eatting them! She laid what looked like a lash, inside a condom outter shell. It looked like an egg, smaller and squishy. We cut it open, and there was a yolk with a tail, and a lash on the end. We've found yolks on the nest box, and her eggs always seem to have a rubbery membrane when we try to crack them open. Now she's dribbling egg white from her vent. Body feels hot. She's gone from stuff face, to haunch in a few hours. Tried to feel inside vent, but she's having now of it. Gave her liquid paraffin as the vet recommended last time with another girl. She'll be off to vets tomorrow. Thanks for being here. staceychristie Posted April 28, 2011 Share Posted April 28, 2011 Well we've popped her in a wooden box in the downstairs loo with feed and water. She's drinking a lot (so that's a good thing) but did notice a lot of yellow shavings, and this was around her beak - so can only guess she's still laying yolks, then eating it(?) . Vet said liquid paraffin would help, and we've given her some Booster supplement. She's not as sleepy now, and when she does rest at least she lies down - before she was just standing up.
