Hi people,

I've just got my first (of many??) eglu.

Today i have put 2, 4 month old Welsummers in there, one called Fillet and one called Nugget (is it wrong to name your chucks after food?)

3 hrs later i have my first egg!! How cool is that? I'm a very proud Daddy. Good girl Nugget.

Anyway, a quick question. SHould i close the door to the eglu tonight when they go in? I want them to feel safe and secure, but not trapped. Bit of a dilemer (one i'm sure everyone goes through).

Hope you can shed some light on this thought.

Many thanks

Paul

Hi Paul and welcome!

I close my Eglu door at night but that's only because at this time of year, my girls get up early and Jenny, bless her, is a noisy madam and likes to let us all know she's up! If we are away overnight or due back late, I leave it open as they're in a secure run though. So long as you close the opening at the end of the Eglu run, they'll be fine if you do want to let them get up when they are ready but they'll be perfectly happy with the door shut.

Hi Paul!

Welcome from me too!

At the moment I leave the door open but in winter I close it - so perhaps up to you to decide which you feel most comfortable with at the moment.

Congratulations on your first egg! Have you eaten it yet?

Hi Paul and congratulations of your girls and egg!

I work away from home a few nights a week and rarely close the eglu door. The run door is always locked when i am away but I only close the eglu door on really cold nights.

I tried locking them in as they were really noisy a while ago, but could still hear them with the door closed

Wow, thanks for the fast replies!!

What sort of time do they rise? It is a bank holiday weekend after all!!

Just wanted them to feel secure on their first night.

But then i guess they must feel pretty safe, or Nugget wouldn't have laid.

Ours seem to get up as soon as it's light

We usually leave the door of the eglu open in the summer so they come and go as they like

We have bought 3 new girls today and they still haven't gone to bed, I hope they go soon

We have had our girls for 3 weeks nearly now. I firstly shut the door for the first week, then left it partly open so they could get up themselves (I wanted to stay in bed a bit longer, instead of rushing out before 6am to let them out for their breakfast)

Now i just lock the run door, & we all seem to be happy with the arrangement.

:D

You might find that you don't sleep too well tonight, you will be worrying about your girls- they will be fine

At least you have already got an egg...... we are still waiting! :(

well I was awake at 4.45 am this morning (don't ask ... one of those things) and my usual habit is to stagger into the back bedroom first thing every morning and peer through the window to see that there are two hens upright in the run. So I did that anyway, and there they were - they wake up when it's light, and see no reason to stay in bed!

I don't close the Eglu door any more, and it doesn't seem to bother them and it means I can have a lie-in sometimes.

Ask away, no one will think they're daft :D

PS The name on your avatar has made me want to watch Moulin Rouge for some reason, I think it's the drink they all drink too much of in the film isn't it

I loved that film :D

Debs, you should have said when you came down... we have some Absinthe under the stairs that OH brought back from Georgia (Russian variety) when he was there last...

Tastes like screenwash to me, but hey, certainly sends your brain into a bit of a muddle!:lol:

Welcome to the forum Absinthe, :D:D:D

Hi and welcome from me.

Glad you asked this question. I've had mine for 5 weeks and from day 1 I always shut the eglu door at 9pm and open it at 7am. Got into the habit now. But I'm on hols for 4 days next week and next door is looking after them and I was not sure if they'd be alright in a closed run but with the eglu door open permanently. Looks as if others say this is ok, so am happy now.

Hoe did you get on then last night? I bet you are up & about already having chats with your chooks- I have already, but my conversation with them at this time of morning is sssshhhhh!!!! :D

3yo doesn't distinguish between weekdays & weekends yet, so we (sorry I! hmm) are usually up sharpish, but I am now feeling smug as I have already pegged my washing out

Another egg this morning!!

Bigger than last nights, and not as brown. I guess this one must be fillets!!

She's laid it in the middle of the run though. Why would she do this? Do you think she just might not like the eglu yet?
