Can they now go outside for a bit ?

Recommended Posts

Hi all my chicks are now 3 weeks old and i have there run ready for them to have a look about in ,

Is it to young for them togo out for a while on nice days ? i carnt get the eh outside as i have no way of powering it outside , i want to give them a bit more room to have a roam about thats not the kitchen as they have nothing in there to peck at and scratch , 3 have lots of feathers ,and 2 not so much .

i would have thought 3 weeks too young.

A nice day can turn into a chilly day if just so much as a cloud scuds over the sun and they just can't maintain their own heat until they are properly feathered up. It wouldn't take much time at all for them to lose too much body heat.

Others may have different views though.

If its a still, bright, sunny day, then they can go out for a short time to stretch their wings and legs. However, as has been said, they can/will get cold quickly if you don't watch over them at that age, so certainly don't leave them outside unattended. It's OK with a broody Hen, the chicks dive under her when they start to feel cold, but with chicks you've raised in an incubator, you need to be much more careful when they are very young.

I wish i could get them an older girl to go in with them :( i may get an older lady when they go outside as i will have 2 eglus by then so plenty of options :)

Thanks for all the advice :D i will keep them running about in the kitchen untill all there feathers are there .

Ps some have loads of feathers allready and some only have a bit on there wings :!: i know as i have diferent breeds they will mature quicker but dose that mean wait untill all are fully feathered ?

Okay I think I'm misunderstanding you here but just to be on the safe side: you shouldn't put an older girl in with the babies untill they are big enough to defend themselves. She would pick on them.

Apologies if you just mean you'd like more hens.
