trampoline safety nets?

Recommended Posts

a bit of advice please? when we got our trampoline (5-6 years ago) the girls were much younger, so we had the safety net thing round it.

over the years, as they've got bigger, the net got more and more dishevelled, especially when they worked out they could stand on the climbing frame and do a great big leap into the middle... it all got dragged down, so was only about 3 ft high all the way round.

so it reached the point where I thought it was even less safe with the net than without - sense of false security mainly - so we took the net and the supporting poles off.

it looks much better without the net - less of an eyesore. the girls are now 12 and 14 and really quite sensible.

I am quite tempted to leave it without the net (not to mention cost of buying a new one); but then think what if there are extra kids round and games get out of hand... yes I know they should only be on it one at a time but in practice that just doesn't happen. and if I get a new one, I'm pretty sure it will end up as dishevelled as the old one in a shorter space of time...

so shall I get a new net or not??

When we had one we didn't have a net at all. Our children used the trampoline from about 6 - 13yrs. I chose not to have a net as didn't like that way that a large number of children seem to pack onto a trampoline with a net and then almost bounce off the net into each other. I have personally heard of more injuries caused by children knocking into each other because there were too many on, that those falling off. I felt it also gave a false sense of security.

Sorry to be the voice of doom and say the opposite, when we got our trampoline a friend who is a teacher knew loads of kids that had fallen off and injured themselves... the worst being a broken arm I believe. I got concussion as a kid from falling off one.

We dont have a net but have sunk ours into the garden instead. Love it. Nowhere to fall off to and we use it for sunbathing and to sit on for picnics. Best thing we ever did

My girls are 5, 9, 12 & 13 and there is no way I'd let any of them on our trampoline without the safety net. They play on it on a daily basis and I'd be rich if I had a £ for the number of times I've watched them on it and been glad the net was there to prevent a catastrophe. I am positive that without they'd all be nursing broken bones by now.

I'm not advocating one or the other this is just our experience. We have a 12 foot trampoline and no net either. Ours got ripped bit by bit until it was no use whatsoever. So like you we took the poles down. We've never replaced it. Our kids are 13, 10 and 7 and they use the trampoline on a regular basis. It sits on bark chippings so there's a fairly soft landing. It's used as a launch pad into our swimming pool when it's up. They've fallen off a few times but not done any damage.

the worst trampoline accident I have come across was youngest's best friend - on a trampoline, with a net, and a 5 year old landed on her and broke her arm.

I am still thinking no net, because I think it will remind them they have to be sensible, rather than just assume it is safe because there's a net around it. and they much prefer lying on it to read or sunbathe now anyway!!

We didn't have a net for a while, as I took it down to try and conserve it over the winter months. The kids started to use the trampoline again without the net, but weren't happy about it.

Mind you it is up on our second tier in the garden which there is a 5ft drop :anxious: The net is back up again now.

One of my fave things is lying on it on a summers day and watch the clouds go by 8)

Oh I wish we could sink ours, our net is really past it best and the safety pads, it costs just as much to buy replacements as to buy an new trampoline!

I like them in the ground too, but cant see it being worth it now my girlies are getting so old....

and chuckmum you are right about the cost of replacing the safety net and poles!! we need the new padding to go over the springs as well, and that seems to be about £50.

Well I've done a quick impulse buy and have a half price plum trampoline being delivered tomorrow, :shh: OH doesn't know yet, I shall hide it in the garage and bring it out when we break up for the school hols in three weeks! It will help the summer go with a bounce!
