WIR up, chicks in - bedtime story

Recommended Posts

YAY - WIR was up for 5pm and I had my chicks in for 6. I let them settle and was VERY pleased when they all found the grub/grit/water dishes !!!

I've been sitting in the run for the last hour watching and encouraging them to come to my hand - 3 have - the araurana seems a little more wary at the mo.

She was the one which suddenly became very vocal - as if calling for a mate (!) - then she squatted down as if to settle. The others then seems to go to her and snuggled - but didn't really 'settle'

I took it on myself to catch each one (!) and put it IN the Eglu as they've not figured out how to climb the ladder (I've smaller ones in the WIR for practice!!) ..............

So - now, they're all in the Eglu. There was a lot of chirping to start with - so I started this post for help(!) - but now it seems to have stopped

They're used to being locked in but I've wedged the door open so they can come out -probably by toppling down the ladder - when they're ready

The Eglu is on a table for my benefit but do you think I should put it on the floor until they're a bit bigger? I don't really want to but if they can't climb up the stairs like Christopher Robin (!), I'll have to keep putting them in...........or is this ok until they get the hang of it.

Promise lots of photos as soon as I can upload on my main pc (currently on laptop) - and I feel slightly more with it - I'm SHATTERED!!!

Are they going to be able to get out without falling?

I'm not sure...........I put the silkie in earlier (obviously too soon) and turned my back. Next thing I knew there was a flutter of wings/loud chirps and a bit of a thud. I suspect in tumbled down rather than strode! It's the biggest of the 4 but they've not yet learned to climb the ladders (baby cradle sides) - should I put it on the floor until I know they're climbing?

They're going to have to stay elevated tonight cos I can't lift the Eglu in one piece and they're all asleep.

SORTED - I've managed to lift it onto the floor - easier going down than up!!! I'll put it back up once I know they can climb - there's a bit of low level chirping going on - they're all bunched up on the rear perches - will they be ok tonight?

My 6wk old bantam boys happily fly up onto the roof of their bedroom and back down again! In fact they sleep on top of their house every night and spend most of the day up there watching the world go by. I'm sure yours will soon get the hang of where to sleep and how to get there. :)

1st night went ok - they slept better than me and I was up before them!!! They all came out at about 7.15 and headed straight for the concession stand!!

I've taken the bars out and put bedding down on top of paper - with a sprinkling of DE
