Ice-cream maker?

Recommended Posts

I'm just browsing the Lakeland catalogue ( as you do) and am attracted by the Cuisinart Ice Cream Duo. We don't have a large enough freezer for the type where you just freeze the bowl, so a machine which does it all separately is attractive- and we do like ice-cream. Anyone got one? Is it worth it, or just one of those gadgets ( like the rice cooker) which takes up cupboard space.

We have the type where the bowl goes in the freezer, so I can't comment on the cuisineart, but I would say don't get one unless you do really like ice cream. We only use ours perhaps 6-10 times a year, but its no bother to us to store it. My OH does like ice-cream but I'm not very keen on most bought stuff (unless I'm in Italy  ). However, I find our home made stuff is perfectly to my taste - less sweet, and just pure fruit/sugar/eggs and cream. For me, the bonus is that I really like the ice-cream and this balances the infrequent use. It always has a very good texture, far better than making it by hand. In the winter we might use up spare cream bought for crumbles or whatever and at the moment we are making strawberry (very pale in colour and delicate essence of strawberry) and also blackcurrant (because its tart).

I also have the type of ice cream maker where you freeze the bowl, and like Daphne, I wouldn't say it gets used that frequently. However, I agree that it makes excellent ice cream and sorbets, far better than you can buy.

Only yesterday I made a batch of gooseberry and elderflower ice cream using gooseberries from my dad's allotment and my home made elderflower cordial. It's totally lush!

We have the Magimix Gelato and absolutely love it. The only thing is you need to find a reasonably permanent place to put it as the mechanisms inside apparently don't like being moved around that much.

We use ours a lot - or, rather did until I had to go on a diet  . It's not cheap, but the ice-cream is fantastic!
