Groovychook
Have just noticed this evening that one of my Sablepoots isn't looking too great all of a sudden. She's keeping herself to herself, seems to have laboured breathing and sounds slightly wheezy when I listen closely. She looked as though she was trying to cough something up a moment ago. Worried and not sure what to do They were nibbling at dried mealworms earlier, but haven't had anything else to eat apart from their growers pellets. Plum
Sounds as though it's something I would see a vet about.
Groovychook
I just hope she makes it through the night before I can get her to the vets Her breathing sounded a bit 'bubbly' a moment ago, so I've brought her inside for the night. I'll put her in the small dog cage with some water and pellets and keep her warm. I just hope I'm not stressing her too much by separating her from the others. chicken bark
You could put some garlic in her water (or Respite) if you have some. I hope she picks up for you. Let us know how you get on.
Groovychook
She's a little more alert now but has just done a strange reddish/ pink poo. I'm presuming that doesn't bode too well I haven't got any Respite, but I do have some citricidal somewhere- wonder if that might help? I'll pop a small piece of garlic clove in the water for now. scarlettohara
Vet first thing in the morning as sounds like respiratory infection.
Groovychook
Can't find the citricidal anywhere but will be ringing the vets as soon as they open.
Plum
You were right to seperate her, respiratory infections pass on quickly. Myco is slow to develop so doesn't sound like that.

Hope so Plum Her eyes looked very bright and clear- no bubbly discharge.... Poor little poppet has settled down a bit. I've noticed a few sneezes and a bit of head shaking- as though she's trying to clear her throat. Wish it was the morning now!!!
sparkysmum
Ohhhhhh she does sound poorly. Fingers crossed for her. Alli x
Groovychook
Martha is still with us She seems a bit brighter this morning, a few more sneezes now but not as wheezy- she's not gasping any more either. We've got an appointment at the vets at 10.30. Hopefully some antibiotics will sort her out! (Hopefully Tylan or Vetmulin as I still have some left from the last problem with the big chooks !) Groovychook
Back from the vets... Martha did normal poo's & chirped all the way there. My vet wasn't sure what the problem was- wondered if she might have had something blocked in her airways that she was trying to dislodge? She said that she seemed slightly lethargic, although she busily preened herself on the examining table! She gave her an oral dose of antibiotic and said to keep her indoors for a couple of days and keep a close eye on her and the others. She hasn't sneezed since first thing this morning and is eating and drinking normally. I wondered if the reddy/ pink poo yesterday might just have been digested mealworm? I have however, seen her nibbling at her bedding & wondered if that might be causing a problem. I can only get hold of easybed or miscanthus down here these days- neither of which is a patch on Aubiose. I hope she's not getting bits stuck in her throat. Anyway, she's back in her cage and I've made her some growers porridge in case her throat is sore.
scarlettohara
Hope she's on the mend - don't laugh but I have a hen with asthma - she sounds as she has a cold but her lungs are always clear, vet gives her abx just in case
chicken bark
Pleased it is good news. Little tinkers aren't they. Worth the worry though.
Groovychook
Thank you both She's making a right old racket now and stomping around her cage. She's just poo'd in her porridge too Every time I go into the room, she flapping her wings at the door and desperate to be let out. I was going to keep her indoors for another night, but if she still seems fine by the morning, do you think I could put her back with the others outside? I don't want to rush things but I feel so mean!

Groovychook
She seems absolutely fine this morning! I'm going to put her back outside as soon as I've cleaned the run
Groovychook
A few months on & Martha has been under the weather again. Last week, I noticed she was hunched and looking a bit sorry for herself. She also seemed as though she was struggling to expel something from her vent, which looked sore. Took her to the vets, who examined her vent- removed tiny bits of 'cooked yolky substance' but couldn't feel anything else. She had a very high temperature though, so was given an anti inflammatory jab and a course of antibiotics. We kept her in for a few days, but she seemed to perk up- was eating & drinking okay, so I put her back out with the others. About three days ago, I noticed that she had what looked like dusty soil in one of her eyes- she'd just leapt out of the dustbath, so put it down to that. The eye looked a bit bubbly in the corner, but I just presumed it was because it had been irritated and was a bit sore. I've been checking her regularly and the bubbles have come & gone... I'd considered ringing the vet back two days ago but she appeared fine that day. She has no other symptoms apart from the bubbles- her eyes look clear and fully open. I got OH to ring vets today whilst I was at work- she thinks it might be Myco and I've got to go and pick up some soluble meds in the morning. She also suggested that we separate her, but it was dark when I got back and she was already happily roosting with the others. Just wondered if Myco can present as just a 'semi' bubbly eye? I can't hear any rattling and she has no discharge from her nostrils. I'll separate her in the morning- just hope that I'm not under-reacting! Redwing
The myco bubbles can come and go yes Hoopefully its not Myco though The meds should do the trick Normally you'd treat the whole flock even after you separate out the visibly ill hen so double check with the vet on that good luck x
Groovychook
Thanks Redwing, I wasn't sure how severe the symptoms should be... sounds like the dust bath might not be to blame. From what I can gather, the vet told OH that all the chooks will need to be treated, so I think that's the plan. I was worrying too much about leaving her with the others for the night, so have been out to get her and she's now tucked up in the spare room. Groovychook
The chooks are now on day two of a five day course of Tylan. I did notice this afternoon that Martha's right eye (the one that was a bit bubbly) was a little swollen underneath. It's hardly noticeable and her eye looks clear and fully open. I'm wondering if it might be her sinus's that are inflamed Hopefully the Tylan will deal with it.
Groovychook
Just to add that today, her face looks more swollen on the right hand side. Her features look a bit lop-sided She's walking around fine but seems to be finding it a strain to expel poo from her vent. This was the problem she had last week before the initial dose of meds. I know that she does manage to poo, from when we've had her in overnight... I'm starting to worry that it might be something other than Mico... thought that on day three of the tylan, we would have started to see some improvement Maybe I'm just being impatient
Groovychook
The course of Tylan has finished and she's not looking great She still seems to be struggling to expel something from her vent and is a bit hunched and ruffled. I've tried to examine her and it feels quite hard. There's no way I can remove it. I've just phoned the vets and am taking her in at 2.45. I'm not expecting good news- the vet didn't hold out much hope if the Tylan didn't do the trick
Groovychook
Martha has been put to sleep She weakened on the journey there. My vet tried to remove the blockage but it was breaking up as she did it and she could feel much more inside. She asked if she could do a PM afterwards and would accept no payment for any of this- bless her. I've just had a call to say that it was probably an infection/ blockage in her womb which was full of pus. The myco had probably reared it's head because she was at a low ebb. Poor little thing. At least she's not suffering now
