janedent
Does anyone keep their Eglu door open at night? The reason I ask is that I'm going on holiday next week and I'm not sure my chicken sitter will always get up at 5am to let them out. My 3 chickens are in an Eglu in a fox-proof run which my husband built. So I thought that maybe since it's summer I could tell the chicken sitter to just leave the Eglu door open. My main worry is that they'll be cold. Has anyone else done this? Also, I'm curious as to how chickens in a Eglu suddenly get red mite (I noticed a bit of an infestation yesterday, after a red-mite-free year) - where do they come from? Egluntyne
Many of us leave the Eglu door open. I leave mine open all year round. Red mite live in wood, and also live on wild birds. They will travel considerable distances for food, and cooped up chickens are a sitting target.

jammybill
I have left my eglu door open since April when I first got my girls and it has worked very well. I would hate to lock them in now. However I was wondering if it would be OK when the weather gets really cold. I note some of you do this so I think I will keep going. The Dogmother
Mine is always open too. If you have a new wooden run then they red mite could be living in that - I'd spray it all.
Sandychick
Always leave the door open too (except for 2 nights last winter when it was -18c )
