Coldwater fish

Recommended Posts

I would say be careful of neons and danios - they might cope in an unheated tank in summer, but certainly won't manage in the winter. White cloud moutain minnows are very nice and stay TINY unlike lots of coldwater fish, you could get lots in your tank (you will need a filter though, they wouldn't cope that well with being "cleaned out" otherwise!) You could get bitterlings, they are pretty and there are various coldwater loaches etc if you wanted something a bit different (though not always that "pretty")

I think it depends where you have the tank in the winter re danios, we had them for years in an unheated tank in the kitchen but we have a rayburn, which is on all winter so the temp in the kitchen never got too low.

We bought a fish tank last week with the intention of just doing a coldwater one. Went into an aquaruim/fish shop for advice and they said that in their view keeping a tropical tank was easier as the coldwater fish tend to be easier to kill! With the modern filtration and heating systems there is not too much upkeep or running costs and you can get prettier fish.

We have started with 3 striped darios (after letting the tank settle with the plants) and will add other fish every 2 weeks. It is so pretty and we love it. There might be a lot of people who have other viewpoints but we are just going on the advice we were given. It is a "proper" shop by the way, not part of a chain so hopefully they gave us good advice.
