Fowl Pox *Sad Update*

Recommended Posts

Anybody have any experience of Fowl Pox?

I'm almost certain that's what my Pekin, Scarlett, has. At first I thought it was scaly leg/face mite & I did find a few lice on her but she also has white dry patches on her wattles and looking at all the pictures on the web and reading about it I'm now convinced it is fowl pox. She has been isolated from all the other hens for a couple of days now and is looking a bit better. I have dusted her and put Sudocreme on the lesions at the base of her comb & petroleum jelly on her legs (that was when I thought it was mites!) and poultry spice in her food, acv in her water............. from what I understand there is no treatment and providing it's not the wet type and doesn't affect her breathing she could make a good recovery.

I'm just not sure how long I will have to keep her away from the other hens? I'm assuming that I will have to wait until all scabs/lesions etc have healed and disappeared at least ...... :?: I realise that they may already have contracted the virus but am hoping that as they were much healthier than her to start with their immune systems are strong enough to fight it off

TIA, Sarah

Thanks, yes I think I had read that one ...... probably not many websites I haven't read about it now! I not sure really what it means by 14 days as I'm not really sure how long she's had it, whether they have it for a while before it's easy to spot. But on reflection I think you're right, the longer I can keep her isolated the better (assuming she survives). I think I might have to find her more suitable accommodation than the cardboard box she's in in my kitchen at the moment though if it's going to be that long

Not yet, I have an appointment with the one vet at our practice who seems to know about chickens tomorrow morning. I really hope I am wrong because I can't see how I could possibly risk reintroducing her to my other hens if she's carrying a virus like that ..... also, if that's what she has I'll be on pins and needles waiting for the others to exhibit symptoms

Been to the Vet - not Fowl Pox. She actually had a broken egg inside her (had her 9 weeks and she has only ever laid soft eggs :( )

Unfortunately she had to be pts.

I've learnt a lesson though - I will never try to self-diagnose again and will take them to the Vet as soon as I think something is wrong.
