george&mildred
How exciting, a day short of a month and we've had our first egg - the 1st of June, so have now had 5 eggs in total. Only one of our chickens is laying at the moment, so we're hoping the other will soon. I was under the impression they laid early in the morning, but the egg is being laid at nearly midday every day. Gave them some corn on the cob, they ate the lot, so that was a popular choice. I'm loving having them in the back garden, they are very inquisitive and have definitely made themselves at home. Ziggy
Congratulations, first eggs definitely are an exciting milestones... and yes you are so right, it's great watching them in the back garden enjoying it all... I found that although the first eggs tasted fine, they actually do get better after a while, nothing wrong with them at first, but ours did get soooo tasty after a little while once the laying was established. Ours too lay later in the morning, not necessarily early. Again congratulations, it's always exciting to hear about first eggs...
Popcorn
Those little presents never become less exciting do they? Congratulations! One of my girls tends to move around the clock with her laying, starting early morning, then gets a little later and a little later until eventually she's back to early morning again. The other one, however, lays around day break continually. There is a method to the madness
little Red Hen
Excellent news! The first find of an egg is really egg-citing! We have a green eglu too, delivered the day before yours and I couldn't believe it when my son shouted out "Mum, look there's an egg!!!!!" I couldn't believe my eyes when he lifted an egg out! We only have one laying at present and she too seems to be laying around lunchtime, but she's still in her first week of laying.
Snowy
Congratulations on your first eggs! I still check mine throughout the day for eggs, the excitement never really wears off! Mine seem to lay slightly later each day, then skip a day and start again early morning. All except Fizz the araucana who just lays as and when she can be bothered. Hen Watch
Hi. My chooks have got strange body clocks too. Last week had a few days running with 3 eggs before 10am. Today, got 1 at 10am, and one at 2pm and 3rd egg didn't arrive.
Kathy C
Congratulations on your first egg George and Mildred. Henwatch, you are not alone. My girls vary their laying time too, Peri and Moet usually manage to get their's laid sometime in the morning. Chandon seems to get a little later each day (I have read it takes 25 hours to make an egg) and then when she has laid betwen 2pm and 3pm she usually skips the next day and lays a whopper early on the following day.
