CatsCube
Hi, I bought some more chicks on Thursday to add to the chicks from my hatch from 2 different poultry breeders. All had been fine apart from a bit of a peck from some of my own chicks towards the newcomers, all chicks are around the 3-5 week old mark. I just got home from work and was checking up on them all when I saw one looked like it had blood on the tip of it beak, as this is the chick who has been the biggest bully I thought she had maybe become a bit more vicious, so I quickly inspected the other chicks for signs of attack and found none, however I have found 3 poos which are entirely made up of a very scarlet fresh looking blood, I then noticed another pecking at one of these poos so know how the other had red on its beak. All the chicks appear to be fine. I understand this can be a sign of coccidiosis, I have Coxiod so I have just added a dose to their water. Do you think its this from one of the new girls, and if so what else should I do? I don't know which one is doing it, I picked them all up and inspected there bums and cant se any stains to indicate which one it is. Or do you think it might be something else? Egluntyne
That's a shame. Have you not quarantined them from the others? If it is just affecting the new ones, you might not be too late to separate them. Coxoid is a good idea if you are not feeding them with medicated chick crumbs. I'd let the breeder know that there is a problem, too. S/he might be unaware, and will be glad of the info so that s/he can take evasive action. CatsCube
No didn't quarantine, didn't have any room for further breeding pens, I thought cocci was only caught from adult hen faeces and all the chicks are in brooding pens indoors away from adult chickens. As I bought the chicks from 2 different breeders and I don't know which chick(s) are affected I don't know who to contact to notify. I thought cocci was very fast acting and would kill a chick pretty fast, there has been no sign of problems over the first few days and no signs of other symptoms so didn't know if it might be something else? Or if it is cocci how long before the coxoid clears things up? I had been planning on putting them outside into their new house tomorrow. CatsCube
Oh no, I have been googling for info, seems its normal for the blood not to show up in poop till about 4 days so that would be about right to be showing up now. I seem to have the worst luck with chicks. I guess all I can do now is keep an eye out on them.
coco
If its any help I had a 16 week old hen with cocci and she was very poorly, not eating or drinking and very sleepy, we did tink she was going to die she was so ill. I have my growers on medicated pellets, keep a close eye on them and if in doubt consult your vet.
CatsCube
I think tomorrow I will move them into the new house with fresh bedding so any infected poop is removed, then I will replace the bedding every 2 days and clean down with jeyes fluid to prevent it from reinfecting or spreading hopefully. I think I will also syringe some of the water into their beaks when I move them, as with a total of about 18 chicks its hard to tell if all of them are drinking at the moment.
