Bramble
I'm just having a rant really I was woken at 2am on Friday morning with RAGING toothache - painkillers etc made no difference at all - trip to the dentist Friday afternoon, she couldn't find anything specific - I have spent all weekend in horrendous pain, then get up this morning and the pain has reduced massively. I can still feel it, but NOTHING like it was. What on earth could cause that much pain and then seemingly resolve itself (just in time to come back to work)
squiffs
Might they have been shifting a bit? I had my wisdom teeth coming in (all but 1 are in now) and whenever they make a little push (once a month or so) they crowd my mouth and cause immense pain and a feeling of pressure in my jaw as if my teeth might pop out or even shatter I'm considering getting that particular one removed as it looks as though it's coming in at a 45 degree angle and I don't want my teeth to go wonky if it tries to force its way up! I use 'orajel' during my flare ups - I recommend it highly, it completely numbs any pain in my mouth; tooth, gum or cheek related!

Chucky Mama
When I had pain like that it was an abscess. It was not correctly diagnosed even though had the dentist looked properly at the xray, they would have seen the evidence The pain was awful, particularly when they decided it was a badly fitted crown and they drilled down on it with a file. I nearly passed out. It took weeks for them to diagnose it. The misdiagnosis cost me hundreds because I had to have a root canal filling and a new crown as they trashed it needlessly I changed dentists
kinsk
Last time I had bad toothache my dentist was fab. It started Friday afternoon and by the time I got home from work the pain was really reving up. I rang him and he then spoke to the local chemist, faxed through a pescription for me to get started on antibiotics straight away. When he x-rayed it on the Monday he couldn't see anything but by then the pain had more or less gone. Hope it doesn't get worse again. Bramble
Thanks all! I have put a call in to my dentist to see if I can speak to her instead of charging all the way over to the surgery to be told everything is ok! I fear an abscess, but if that is the case, could it really "resolve" itself without any particular intervention? My main worry is that this is just a temporary lull in the pain and it's going to kick off again - hope the dentist 'phones me soon
Chucky Mama
I fear an abscess, but if that is the case, could it really "resolve" itself without any particular intervention? For me, nothing would touch the pain despite my dentist telling me to use well over the recommended dose of pain relief Antibiotics sorting it out but it was only a temporary fix as it did come back up (or the infection would 'pop' out into the gum which gave relief as the pressure reduced). Thank you CM - same here with the pain - AGONY, I've taken FAR too many painkillers over the weekend, but with little effect (though I'm sure many people have to put up with much MUCH worse). I have spoken to the dentist. She reckons, from my description, that the pain was caused by the nerve in the tooth dying, and the current "lull" is due to the nerve now having died. She says a root filling (or extraction) is the only option, so I have an appointment for next week to talk things over and hopefully go ahead (but if the pain comes back, apparently I must let her know straight away). Chucky Mama
That all makes sense I had a root canal filling done by someone that specialises in it rather than a standard dentist which I was recommended to do. It went without hitch. It is a long process but for me, pain free. Not cheap though
kinsk
With regards to the painkillers you do know you can take ibuprofen and paracetamol. Dose of ibuprofen and then 2 hours later paracetamol, 2 hours later ibuprofen etc. Providing you can take them they do work well together as one is an anti-inflamatory and one a painkiller. Bramble
Thank you for the tip about the paracetamol and Ibuprofen together ... I'm afraid I had been doing that although I wasn't 100% certain I could/should (desperate times, desperate measures ) Think it would have been good if the dentist had told me though! Thank you CM for the reassurance ... as you say, it is the cost that is painful, rather than the procedure itself!
Chucky Mama
Please be careful with ibuprofen if you have any gastric issues or the possibility of a gastric ulcer. A friend of my MIL's died after taking ibuprofen recently. He was a young man and was unaware that he had an ulcer
kazmac
Paracetamol 4-6 hourly, ibuprofen 6-8 hourly. It's not 4-6 hourly like paracetamol, but both can be taken at the same time. And yes, preferrably with or after food for Ibuprofen to reduce stomach irritation. Despite being very healthy and having no issues / symptoms, my husband also ended up in hospital very ill due to a gastric bleed after days of ibuprofen (following a tooth abscess ) because it perforated an ulcer we didn't know he had! Bramble
Oh my goodness! Thanks for the warnings, guys! I think my poor deceased nerve has calmed down a lot, haven't needed to take painkillers for about 48 hours now - I can still feel it, but NOTHING like it was! I have an appointment for prep work on a root filling next Tuesday, but the dentist said to call before if the pain flares up again.
Chucky Mama
Take an iPod or MP3 player with you, it can be long and boring. I did fall asleep during one of my appointments though
