Chicken watching

Recommended Posts

I like many chicken mums have done this ever since I got my girls - i cat watch too. Now OH does it - caught him in the garden with a cuppa (yes a tea or coffee is a must) watching our new girl. I have to say he indulges my passion for chickens and even likes my chicken tea cosy. I know many of the ladies on here have patient, bemused OH's who let us girls get on with it. I am now wondering if I can mention the subject of a WIR

I am blessed to have a wonderful and very tolerant hubby :D

In the beginning HE had to persuade ME to keep chickens  we've always been into veg growing and being more green, food metres not food miles is kind of a motto of ours  so he thought it would be great to have a few hens in the garden for eggs. I wasn't sure, although upon discovering the cube, I agreed. We bought a cube and 4 hybrids.

I fell instantly in love with the girls and their characters, I also began looking at "the chicken world" and discovered Walk in Runs :anxious:

Now, a few years down the line... We have 25 hens, 2 large WIRs, we've rescued ex batts, we've had purebreeds, hybrids and bantams, we've hatched, we've had meat birds (boys from hatching) and our lives have been changed for ever :D

I plan on a lazy Sunday for us today, which means we will probably both be sat in the garden, OH indulging his passion for poultry photography, and me pottering around sorting the umpteen feeders and drinkers and poo trays

I am possibly an exception to the rule as I am male and love my chickens. My wife, when I suggested we got them late last year was quite horrified. She has a great fear of any bird due to her watching Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" film as a child. It used to be a nightmare when we went to the coast with the mass of seagulls around.

When I pointed out to her that they would be kept in a WIR at the end of the garden behind the greenhouse she agreed to go along with my 'crazy' plan. I now have 8 ladies.

Initially she would not go nearer to the WIR than 10 metres, even when taking our grandchildren to see the chickens. 6 months on she is reasonably comfortable going to the edge of the run. I can never see her going inside ever, but progress has been made. She loves their eggs and overall she is happy that I have an interest in them.
