Rugby World Cup 2011

Recommended Posts

OH has put off a social engagement so he can watch the rugby tomorrow morning  I hope England play with some verve. We got a talking book out last week on rugby for a car journey. It was memories of all 4 nations although it turned out to be 2 hours of mostly Welsh people talking about the great times of the 1970s plus some very old boys talking about the amateur game in the 1920s etc when they had to sew their own rose on, find their way to the ground etc, plus some funny Irish stories including one chap who ended up running Heinz  Unfortunately he had a bad game and the headline in the paper was 'Heinz Meanz Has Beens' It was narrated by Cliff Morgan but lots of other contributions. It was really interesting.

Epic battle between England and Scotland. Very tense, very good. Playing France next which looks good as they were dreadful against Tonga who were excellent.

Had O2 pie and beer for breakfast!

We had a fry up whilst watching! Was a tense game - looking forward to France. If you listen to their press they sound like they are in meltdown, and they were awful in their game against Tonga - wonder if they will pull themselves together in time for their game against England...

OH planning on getting up early to see both games, which probably means I will too, as will Mother (she is Welsh). I think England should beat France (famous last words) despite our rather lumbering performances and on current form Ireland has the beating of Wales....but I have to admit I do want Wales to win, Go Shane Williams :D

I don't mind that England are out, I don't think they have played well all tournament and didn't deserve to progress. But I loved watching Wales. I'm old enough to remember the great days of the 70s, my Mum used to go and watch Llanelli when she was a girl so she has a lifetime of Welsh rugby behind her, and on Saturday I thought they played fabulously to beat a good Irish side, no disgrace to the losing side in that match. We are an excited household  Although I also think NZ are the best side in the tournament. Roll on the weekend!

We were so disappointed when Warburton got sent off - me and my Mum couldn't watch the rest of it. I know Wales played their hearts out but the bottom line is they didn't take their chances with the boot so I can't really quibble with the result. NZ were superb again today; they so deserve to win the tournament.

I was so impressed by the attitude of the Welsh team on Saturday, they didn't let their heads go down, they dug deep and played with real passion, they missed a couple of chances and really deserved to win. I so hope that New Zealand now win overall, because the French have been weak thoughout and it is great to see a host nation come out on top, when you are neutral, and rugby is such a way of life over there.

Enjoy the match Cate in NZ. Exciting night for you. Haka was immense.

It was all a bit edge of the seat wasn't it. Plenty of adrenaline (& beer  ) flowing these parts last night, I can tell you.

Unfortunately I missed the Haka, too busy tootling around doing other things, but there's been lots of positive comments on it, the French team have been praised for recieving it & responding appropriately....even Maori TV went to great lengths to comment on the French response. It was, apparently, pretty unique to have a Northern hemisphere team accept & respond to it, it being very much a pacific island thing....and a huge cultural thing for Maori. Seriously, there's a haka for anything, & it is a process of them performing & the person/ team/ whatever to whom it is being done recieving it & responding.

Good result though, thank goodness :D
