Never just go to look....

Recommended Posts

During a visit 'just to look' at Blackwater traditional rare breeds near Romsey this afternoon a little accident happened... 3 hybrids just somehow jumped into a box and came home with me  I have no idea how

So now we have Daphne the Amber link, Doffy the blue ranger , Doris the light sussex.

Lovely clean and vaccinated birds, just coming into lay so we should have eggs again

Just the pick me up I needed after my 'new to me' 4 x 4 died this morning with gear box issues less than a month after purchase :boohoo:

Funny how whenever I go 'just to look' a box sort of finds its way into the car before I even start the journey. 'Just to look' becomes 'Just in case' and 'Just in case' becomse 'Just seeing if they'll get on'. Surprise, surprise, OH is not that keen on my 'just to look' trips out.

Well done you all the same. We have to give the Morehens contingent all the support we can don't we? :D

I blame cars for those accidents.

The turbo blew on my car in the morning and in the afternoon I had 2 new chickens in the garden!

Looking forward to seeing pictures and hearing how they get along.

I had a 'just a look' at some speckeled sussex today but OH wasn't convinced by my 'Oh, they're so cute, they'll keep Dilys company' line!

Hi all,

I'm desperate to get 3 or 4 more chickens, looking for some pure breeds to go with my two hybrids. Having just bought a second hand cube and WIR -only had the GO and extended run since the summer but got the bug!!

I'm struggling to find anywhere near where I can get more girls, was just talking to a breeder and he said that no reputable breeder would have any POLs until Spring! Aargh - got loads of room and a new house and no new girls to go in it :(

Can anyone verify what this breeder has said is right, or is there a hope I'll find some?

 My breeder round the corner has POL hybrids & Pure breeds available :eh: and I would definately recommend her! Also I bought my 2 Bovans Goldlines & my Cream Legbar from a different breeder exactly one year ago last sunday - so no, not right as far as my experience goes. I'm sure I've seen on here somewhere that this is a good time to find Pure Breeds in particular.... Maybe he just didn't have any and didn't want you looking elsewhere... :liar:

Hi vicky

thanks, did wonder if that was the case. I live in south shields and I've found it much harder to find chickens in this area, am willing to travel, but not further than a couple of hours by car, would be a long day for me and the chooks! I've spoken to a nice guy tonight who breeds pure bantams, hadn't really thought about getting smaller birds, but he has silverlaced wyandottes and buff orpingtons available so I'm tempted. Don't really know much about bantams though, are their eggs tiny, are they as easy to keep? All advice very much appreciated. :)

I've only had my Silver Laced Wyandottes for 4 weeks (they are 16 weeks old now), so can't really advise you on how easy they are to keep in general. Have to say I love them to bits at the moment though! They are in a seperate run & new plastic house (from Bubbleskitchens.... :anxious::shh: ) at the moment as they are too small to mix with my others. But I let them into the WIR every morning to stretch their wings & legs while I prepare breakfasts for all 3 groups of girls. They ping all over the place  but are as good as gold going back in! I tap their bowl and they run behind me back into their own run. I have another Bantam - a lemon pyle Brahma (who isn't laying yet either...at 24 weeks  ..) but her eggs won't be much noticably smaller than the others. Not sure that'll be the case with the Wyandottes. I'll post a picture of my girls so you can see them :D

Good luck with whatever you choose though x x

vickichicky your chooks are lovely. Especially your lemon Brahma  At least 'just looking' on the web is safe - well almost - but me now wants a Brahma big time :anxious:

Heathers Hens - I'd go have a look at those Silver Laced Wyandottes and Banty Orps. My friend's Wyandottes eggs look almost normal sized to me and Orps are such big girls that even in banty size they are not all that small. Also banty eggs are supposed to be extra good for you because there is more yolk to white. Go and be tempted

that lemon Brahma just melts my heart I NEED one it would make a lovley playmate for my BBQ (pekin bantam) as the bantam I bought with her is normal size and the my daughters frizzle which we thought would be little is getting rather large as well so a lemon brahma would be perfect :D

she is a cutee! I hatched her & 9 others out from eggs :D Unfortunately both the Lavender Aruacanas were boys :( so one was re-homed and the evil one went to cockerel heaven :|

She was everyones favourite from day one because of her feet  (which if you need an excuse for the OH's makes her ideal for a back garden chicken as they don't do so much damage scratching around..... )

As a grower....

And lastly as a baby (hatch) (OMG - still makes me squeak to myself when I see the chick shots)

I would actually like a couple more next year when my local breeder Sue has more...... and as she's the OH's favourite I might JUST be able to wangle it!:lol:
