yvonne
My OH is not a fan of board games, but I am and we are spending New Year with friends when he will join in (and in fact generally really enjoys himself !). Anyway, no point us buying any more for ourselves, but I was thinking of getting one as a gift for our friends and also as something new to play on the evening itself. Was in John Lewis and the QI game caught my eye - does anyone have this or anything similar they would recommend (or not) as they are quite pricey and can either give years of fun or maybe just fall rather flat. For info, Cranium, Trivial Pursuit and similar games have gone down well in the past. Thanks
Goosey Lucy
Articulate is one OH and I have enjoyed.
Chucky Mama
Ex Librus is not a board game but it is a really fantastic game that will get everyone laughing. Basically someone reads the blurb of a book from a card. Then everyone (bar the reader -take it in turns) makes up a first or last line of the book depending on the toss of a coin. Everyone's efforts are read out along with the correct one. People then have to guess which is the real one. You get one point if you get it right and another if people choose your first line. It is very simple and really funny. Everyone that we have played it with have gone out and bought it. You don't need to know anything about books
bluekarin
Bananagrams is a good fun game which adults and kids can play, and you can dip in and out of it if you like A real adult one is Passout. You have tongue twisters which you have to read perfectly. If you make a mistake, you take a sip of drink. It says on the box not for use with alcohol, but.......well, what do they expect! counturchickens
I got some cheapie ones from an m&s outlet last year, one called battle of the sexes was good, at least my sis and I thought so as we were the winners!

chickric
We've bought this, Bezzerwizzer to play over Christmas, haven't had a go yet but like the sound of it.
Olly
Pass the Bomb is simple, but very entertaining if you have had a drink, and don't ban rude words ... I have happy memories of a camping trip when we played this.
craftyhunnypie
We've got pass the bomb but didn't understand it ( the 3 letter cards). So we just used the bomb & played a bit like Family Fortunes! We love Pictionary here - a right good laugh after you've had a few. It can get rude! I've also played Rapidough - also a laugh. Oh & Scrabble, naughty words We like games - so any recommendations I'll be keeping an eye on. Emma.x
lizinsa
We've bought this, Bezzerwizzer to play over Christmas, haven't had a go yet but like the sound of it. We played that last year (it's a Christmas tradition to play a new board game on Boxing Day) I enjoyed it and it caused the usual family arguments (a sign of a good game). It is quite like trivial persuit but you 'bet' on how many points you want the question to be worth. The only problem we found with it were that the questions were very UK specific (we had an American with us) and if you were of a certain age (probably 30s) you had a much better chance! I'd also second Bananagrams though it is less of a board game if you want to make an evening of it.
chelsea
I like Balderdash (not sure if they still make it) it's a bit like "call my bluff" , pictionary and rapidough which is a more creative version of pictionary!
HarrisonFamily
Not really a board game but I used to love playing the card game - pit - great with lots of people, any age can play...lots of shouting and excitement...

pips_pekins
But..if you are going to play Pit, get everyone to cut their nails !st!!!! Stupid question time but I have never heard of Pit so how is it played and why the short nails? I am really finding this thread interesting as I would love to find a game we can all get into and enjoy. DS used to love Cluedo when he was younger
yvonne
Thanks for all the replies, there are definitely less games around these days as I guess X-Boxes and the like have largely taken over. I decided to get the QI game for our friends anyway (will report back) but may buy Balderdash as well for us...
ubereglu
Carcassonne. It's quite fun and works with a wide age range of people. It can be slightly complicated at first though, but has good instructions.
HarrisonFamily
Pit is a game where you have to collect a set of cards (in the one we had as a child there was, wheat, barley , oats etc) From what I remember the cards are dealt (the same number of sets as people....) and you have 2 other cards Bull and Bear, bear is bad and you need to get rid of it....bull can be used as any card but if you are caught with it ...it loses you points...the bell goes and everyone at the same times starts swapping cards...so you start calmly saying you have 3 to swap (quite often people claim they are 3 the same.....) you quickly swap as everyone starts swapping you get more and more eager, shout more, grab cards before someone elses...you get points for getting a set and lose points if you get the bear.... I am sure we used to have 10 people playing from about 6 up to 80....my Dad was a master at passing awful cards whilst claiming they were the excellent ones....lots of fond memories in fact I am going to look for a set now for Christmas.... Lavenders_Blue
Ooh I remember we had a set of Pit cards when I was a little girl. I wonder if my parents still have them? Might have to give it a go this Christmas if they can find it!
Lavenders_Blue
Opps, meant to add that we usually play Articulate at Christmas. My Dad invariably comes up with the most random, bizarre descriptions of the words which generally sends us into fits of laughter... a great game if you have a loose cannon in the family! Forestchook
Triolet is very good - a bit like scrabble but with numbers; you put down tiles to add up to 15. Doesn't go on as long as scrabble can. Whot is a good card game. I also recommend Pass the bomb. I've never played but my aunt say 'Befuddled, bemused and bewildered' is very good N
snowberry
As a kid I had a brilliant strategy game called Cul De Sac, but I think it comes under another name 'Blockade'. A square board with pieces that are home (?). The other player has to get to your side & you block them by putting up fences so they have to navigate it like a maze...brilliant! I don't think you can get it anymore
yvonne
We used to play one called "In speakquence" (owned by some friends) which involved coming up with definitions one word at a time in teams - was great fun especially after a few sweet sherries, again this seems to have disappeared.
