Willow
Our only remaining Omlet hen is dying . I noticed yesterday that her comb was dark and floppy and she was looking very dull. This morning she is sitting down up by the eglu in the furthest corner of the run barely moving although she is obviously still breathing and her eyes have gone white. I don't want to distress her by trying to get to her as I'd have to dismantle the run around her (I'll have to do that to retrieve the body later) and she doesn't seem to be in any pain. The other hens are leaving her alone. I'm not sure there is anything I can do for her other than wait :

Tweety
That is sad I hope that the end comes quickly and peacefully for her. I too would leave her where she is and not disturb her.

Willow
Thanks all, I wasn't sure if I was doing the best thing for her by leaving her where she was but we kept checking and she wasn't showing any distress or inclination to move, mid afternoon her little head just fell forwards and she was dead She had a good life but it was a bit of a shock to see her eyes go white overnight. LunaKiw1
Distressing for poor you but it sounds as if it was a gentle end for her. I hope you will soon find yourself ready to take on more chooks as although they never replace much loved other hens they do bring fresh joy. xx
Tweety
I'm sorry she has gone, but it must be a relief for you in a way. As you say, she had a good life - and, by the sounds of it, a good death too.

Willow
Thanks for all your kind words. It was a very peaceful end. although Primrose was the last of our original two omlet hens we still have 4 more (I must update my signature Another old chicken I'd taken in for someone else years ago died a couple of months ago when we were on holiday (my neighbour was upset as he looks after the chickens very well for us) we'd been expecting that as she'd been slowing down and less interested in food over a few weeks. I will get 2 new chickens in the spring.
Mum
So sorry to hear about Primrose, it's always upsetting to lose a hen. Which breeds are you looking at getting in the Spring?
Jennifer Jane
So sorry, it's always sad to lose them but at least her end was relatively quick. RIP Primrose (such a pretty name) x
Willow
Now I'm over the shock I'm glad it was such a peaceful end. re breeds I don't know I like the look of light sussex and I do want chickens that are easier to see in the garden than gingernut rangers We have 2 blue layers and two brown layers so some white eggs would look pretty on my egg skelter. (Although none of the chickens are laying right now). I love the name Primrose, it's the middle name of an old friend of my ES and we were going with a bit of a flower name theme at one time. Millie-Annie
Sorry to hear about Primrose, my last two ex-batts went in the same peaceful way. I have a Suffolk Noir, she is fantastic. Beautiful, full of character and so friendly
