Chickaboo
I keep my 2 chickens on bark chippings, which are replaced in their big monthly clean out. But they always stay on the same patch of ground, I am a bit concerned about the build up of bacteria etc. I've heard that they should rotate different patches of ground, but this isn't possible in my garden. Is this ok, what do other people do?
Christian
try some GARDEN lime on top of the soil when you s"Ooops, word censored!"e the chippings out. It sweetens the soil. I sprinkle it in the run every few weeks, water it in, then put more aubiose on top. (make sure it is garden lime, as the other lime is caustic). AMO
Hi I keep my run in the same place - the girls turn it over so much that I doubt anything has time to fester! I do remeove the top layer every 8-12 weeks and replenish to keep it fresh. Hope this helps AMO
The Dogmother
Me too. In addition to lime, I also sprinkle some Staolsan on the soil to kill off any nasties.
Jill
Probably a stupid question but do you buy garden lime from a garden centre?

Jill
Thanks. I have now bought a packet of garden lime but it says on the box to keep away from pets. Should I shut the hens in while I sprinkle it on or does it mean just don't give it to them to eat?
