Nicola O
I feel really bad and guilty now. Last night went to my parents neighbours party - it's a ritual every Christmas Eve with the same group of friends going, and they always make egg sandwiches which are really yummy, and everyone makes a bee line for them - the the extent that they don't bother making any other types of sarnies. I casually threw into the conversation about them being free range and was told yes, they were - but towards the end of the evening I saw the boxes in the kitchen and they were battery eggs. I can't say anything as Mum & Dad will be mortified if I made a fuss (and they don't really see what the problem is), and the hosts would be really emabarassed - but I feel really guilty now, so much so that I went out and apologised to my ex-bats this morning, how daft is that Nothing I can do about it now but wanted to 'confess' to those who would understand. chestnutmare
The sandwich makers must have known how important it is to buy free range rather than caged otherwise why would they lie and say they were FR? You weren't to know so don't feel bad. Maybe next time you're in their company tell them how wonderful they are for buying FR , really talk them up just to make them feel awkward for telling fibs if nothing else. Nicola O
I don't think they deliberately lied, I asked the question as others were talking to her and she answered in a flustered 'oh, i think so, yes'. Perhaps they are the sort who don't worry/care about battery hens/eggs and do buy them generally - if so, I've learnt something new about this lovely couple who I've known for about 30 odd years. Mum
Next time you are around that area, take them some eggs from your own chooks I think once people have seen the colour of genuine free range and tasted the difference/richness, they soon get to realise that shop bought eggs are just watery ping-pong balls disguised as an egg. majuka
My sympathies, that must have been horrible. I know that the vast majority of battery eggs end up as ingredients, and that it is only a minority that end up as whole eggs. I can more understand if people pick up say a ready meal in a shop and don't check to see whether or not it contains eggs and if so, what source. To actually knowingly buy eggs from caged birds is really sad. Obviously things are financially very difficult for many people but I am really appalled that some people do still buy whole eggs from caged birds. Next year you'll have to eat before you go, or smuggle your own food in!
