Will she be Cold ?

Recommended Posts

Due to excessive feather pulling, resulting in blood, I have had to seperate my girls (LONGGGGG story).

They can all see each other and do free range all together, most days.

So Lily lives in half of the run and sleeps in a cat box with aubiose - there is a plant saucer with aubiose and shredded paper for her to sleep in.

Will she be warm enough in this weather ?? (was wondering about wrapping it in bubble wrap but was worried she might catch her claws in it (she does jump on top of it) and rip out a claw if she fell (or something) )

If it gets much colder I would say no she wouldn't be ok, it's not a great deal different to sleeping outside IMHO

Some of us keep the coops open all year round and that's ok when a bird has another to snuggle against but a lone bird in an exposed bed is different, you could use a towel to cover the basket leaving only the front open I suppose but if I have lone chickens then they are always in a closed coop or inside (shed/stable) at night

You could take the basket in to a shed/garage on the coldest nights maybe?

Last night Molly frizzled feathered Poland who is quite mad chose to sleep in the cat box that I use as an extra nest box in my walk in run. She was fine this morning. She has gone back in the cube tonight though. Cat box is one of those covered cat litter things no door though.

Thanks all.

Since it was already -2 degrees by 6.30 last night I did bring her inside in the cat box (otherwise I would have worried all night!).

I have an outside temp sensor and I know it went down to -6 degrees.

Noyan - thanks for that - I assume its colder in Hull than here in Leicester.

Should be getting warmer in a fews days - so shouldn't be such a problem soon.

Thanks all - its always reassuring to have the Omlet collective wisdom on these things, H
