Post-op collars

Recommended Posts

Hi. We are planning to have our dog spayed shortly and the nurse at our vets recommended that we buy a collar that she described as a 'donut' collar to prevent Poppy from licking her wound as it heals. We were advised that these aren't sold by the vets but that we can buy one online. Does anyone know what these are actually called or where we could buy one from?

Thanks

Sally

Just as another option, my girl was spayed on Thursday and I was given the choice of either the normal lampshade collar or a dog t-shirt. It looks like a babygro  I opted for the babygro as I though Tango would tolerate it a lot better and indeed she has been quite happy wearing it. It was really good when she came home from her operation as she was very cold and shivering - shock I expect. It completely covers the wound area so that the dog can't fuss at the stitches, the only thing you have to remember is to hitch it forward crop-top style when your dog goes for a wee.

What size is your dog and when is she being spayed? You'd be welcome to borrow the dog babygro if you think it would be any help. It's a size small.

Thank you for your replies.

LB - Poppy is a labrador so think she will definitely need a bigger size than small but thank you for your kind offer :)

She won't be having the op until March but want to be prepared and know that there is no way she or we could cope with one of those 'lampshade' style collars

Just had Flynn spayed, and we were Given the collar, but she left it all alone totally!!!, So we gave it back, and got a refund! Bonus.

Flynn is a spaniel X about the same size as a Lab. Very active. the hard bit was keeping her calm while she healed up.(we managed 10 days with very little walking etc) we didn't dap her, but managed... Not easy!!

This is the exact problem I am having at the moment. Tango is like a coiled spring! I caught her earlier today throwing her squeaky toy for herself and chasing it :shameonu: She's far too smart for her own good, 'You're not going to play with me then Mum? No problem, I'll just throw my toy for myself then." Yesterday's efforts to race at full speed up and down the hall and tank up the stairs have been thwarted by a succession of closed doors and stairgates.

Perhaps you could get your dog used to having less exercise/being calm in the house before she is spayed. It won't be such a shock when she is more or less confined to barracks that way.

Thanks again for all your help :) I like the idea of keeping her calm before her op but unless a miracle occurs before then I can't imagine it happening! She is a very lively typical puppy and one of her favourite pastimes is chasing round the house especially if she can see the cat!

Comfy collars are the ones you've described, http://www.comfycollars.co.uk/ here's their website. I brought one for my dog when he was castrated as he absolutely hated the cone collar given by the vets, he much preferred the comfy collar but I decided not to use it and just put a big, children's top on him which covered the wound and stopped him from licking it and he was much happier with that. :D

Our rabbit (now sadly deceased) was able to get out of his collar - never did work out how he did it. The cat never had one when he broke his leg - but he removed his own sutures with his teeth when our backs were turned. i expected vet to tell us off but he laughed and said it happens all the time.
