Corian or Stone???

Recommended Posts

Is there anyone out there that has Corian (or similar) as a work surface?

We are going to change our kitchen, I was initally looking at stone (granite or quartz) but then liked the feel and no visible joins of Corian. The kitchen designer lady that came around yesterday said she wouldn't touch Corian with a barge pole as it scratches (fine scratches but when sun hits it apparently looks nasty) none of the other kitchen designers from other stores have mentioned this.

Either way it is a hell of a lot of money to be spending out on so I really need to get this right.

Any personal experience advice in this area would be welcome.

Thanks

Jacquie

I have had dark green Corian work surfaces in the kitchen for the last 9 years. I have been very happy with them; my sink is also Corian but this is cream and there is a seamless change over from one colour to the other.

You can get small scratches but these tend to wipe away when you use the cleaning kit they supply, I also got a set of sanding type discs for cleaning out bigger scratches but I very rarely use these. I do have a small chip in the Corian where I dropped something incredibly heavy on it and I understand the Corian people can repair these but I've never got around to having this done.

I do get a bit fed up with the sink as OH regularly leaves tea bags in it and it seems to stain quite quickly but a hot solution of bleach or something similar will bring it up clean - I also think the sink is quite scratched as I bring in vegetables from the garden and the grit and mud leaves marks but I guess that could happen to many sink types treated the way I treat mine  .

My kitchen is also north facing so I don't get a lot of sun to look at any flaws in the work surface so that may be a factor to consider.

I have never compared my Corian to a stone surface so I can't make any comment on that but overall I've been very happy with my Corian.

That's a very good tip.....thanks for that.

I'm moving house and although a free standing kitchen is on the cards (you can swap the units around for a change :D ) I was thinking of a corian sink though in a black and it did cross my mind that it might get quite dirty.

We had a new kitchen fitted nearly five years ago, and chose a granite work top, expensive, but still looks like new. My friend installed a new kitchen about three years ago and chose corian, looks lovely, very sleek and modern, but has not worn as well as the granite, she has quite a few chips in it and she has an obsessively clean and careful OH - unlike mine! If you do go for granite, remember to buy an e cloth to wipe it with, no chemicals, little effort, lovely result!

I chose corian for the science labs in my sixth form college in a pale jade and cream corian for the reception desk and our posh sinks in the toilet blocks. It's really good, looks natural and sands down if scratched. Our Refectory servery is granite. Both are good, the corian isn't as shiny and some colours do show the joins. I'd be envious of any one who had either but would pick granite if I had the choice for my own kitchen.
