Things come in threes?

Recommended Posts

I now have three of my girls on Baytril for three very different illnesses. :( Rosie the new Orpington is almost finished her dose from Mycro and seems absolutely fine.

Bramble, one of my older girls yesterday wasn't right so went off to the vet. She has a suspected tumour but is getting antibiotics just in case its an infection, but he could feel something that shouldn't be there near her gizzard and stomach. She spent last night in the laundry room and after having food and water syringed into her yesterday she is eating a little today and seems a bit brighter.

Then.... today Hazel, another of the older girls, seemed not right. And shes got peritonitis. I had assumed the eggy poos in the cube were from Bramble as she was unwell but it turns out Hazel has peritonitis again :( I have started her on the baytril and waiting for the vet to phone me back. She doesn't look good at all. So I'm just now wondering whether I should have her and Bramble inside which would leave Ash all alone (which I don't really want to do), or if I should put Bramble out (but I won't know if she is eating)...

Argh.... Anything else you want to throw at me world??

UPDATE

Just back from the vet (three days running now...) And it appears that Bramble has an infection in her crop (can't remmeber the name he used) however she is back to pretty much normal now, although her crop still feels a little spongy. I am giving her 3 days off meds then starting 3 days back on if its no better.

Hazel's peritonitis is softening which is great news, but whilst we were there she started bringing up water from her crop so seems she has the infection too. More meds.... Hazel is in tonight herself after I decided Bramble has caused enough destruction indoors so could go out.

So positive news and fingers crossed it all keeps getting better.

However, now I'm going to have to wait much longer for all the girls to mingle as I don't want anyone getting infected. Thankfully the three new Orpington girls actually seem happy in their run. If I leave it open I have to coax them out they are just so chilled out. (Saying that, I am *still* having to put them through the eggport door to bed every night... :wall: )

Thank you for all the kind thoughts!

Uma - that all sounds very positive. The mingling can wait - a pain, I know, but better safe than sorry.

As for your Orps and the eggport ... maybe try leaving them to find their own way for a night or two? Otherwise, just like with recalcitrant toddlers, you might be making a rod for your own back? Chickens are creatures of habit, by manually putting them to "bed" via the eggport, they are not learning how to do it for themselves and will see the egg port as their means of going to bed? Just my thoughts, hope I don't offend. xMx
