Need some advice re couriers

Recommended Posts

Help :!: I've got into a bit of a pickle :( I have a bid on a Cube on ebay and it finishes tomorrow. It's all a bit of a nightmare. I've put too high a maximum bid on and I hadn't reckoned on the cost of couriering it up to Scotland. Have had some silly quotes up to £400 to bring it up. Simon came across a site http://www.anyvan.com where couriers place bids for your business. Have had a couple of more reasonable quotes but I don't know anything about them.

Feeling a bit out of my depth and feeling even worse now that a forum member is selling a cube & is much closer. :(

Would appreciate your words of wisdom . Alli x

You could try explaining (very nicely) to the seller to see if they will retract your bid. Explain you had used couriers before and not expected such high quotes. I think the earlier you tell them the more likey you are to get a reasonable response.

I say this with no expertise, I just hope it may help and I know there are very experienced ebay users on here who will be along with more specific advice soon.

I think you can retract a bid (or you used to be able to :? ) but only if the item still has over a certain amount of time to run.

Is it too far for you to contemplate driving to pick it up yourself? (sorry, I'm sure you've already thought about this).

Hope you get it sorted xx

Would check eBay t&c's to see if you can retract your bid. I would have thought there would be some sort of mechanism in place.

If not, where is the cube and where are you? Only need towns for now not your full addy.

I might be able to get a commercial haulage rate for you on a group age truck. Can't promise it will be much less but worth a try if you get stuck with it.

Thanks folks, there's always good advice on the forum. Can't retract bid or lower maximum bid, have looked into this. To be fair it's probably a good deal, it's just the haulage rates that are a killer. I wish I knew more about the courier I have had a good offer from - maybe I should just trust them.

Duncan08, thank you so much for even thinking about how to help. I hope I won't need you but the cube is in Tamworth & we're in Dunblane, central scotland.

Might it be worth contacting a local trucking firm???? If they backhaul from up country they might be able to pop the cube on the back of a truck for a better price than a dedicated courier?

My OH is a trucker and he says if someone can get it onto a pallet it wouldn't be more than two pallet spaces. His estimates of pallet costs Tamworth to Dunblane maybe £65 per pallet, so perhaps £130?...certainly not £400....

You may also be lucky and find that you are outbid. People often wait for the last few seconds before bidding.

One other thing..are you sure the seller is going to be happy about you arranging a courier? (If I was selling a Cube I would NOT permit someone to arrange a courier - because of the hassle invokved in having to take it apart and package it up to travel.)

If you haven't already checked with them, I would recommend you do so immediately.

Hope it all works out for you.

Hi, Re couriers - do a search on Ebay on "courier " and you will find thousands. Email or ring them (most list a telephone number), give them the two locations (From ,to) & they will give you a quote .

That said I have heard good things about Shipley's.

I would definatly check that the seller is OK with a courier collecting the Eglu.

An Ebay bid can be retracted under certain circumstances & if there is more than 12 hrs to go. Search Ebay , Help, Retracting a Bid. The seller can retract it, or you can fill in a Bid Retraction Form. It depends on how much you have already said to the seller , as Ebay doesn't allow many reasons for retracting a bid. Could you say that a child in your family had been mucking about on your Ebay account perhaps? At worst you'll have to hope that someone outbids you- most people leave it till the last couple of minutes to place a bid.

The only other way , if you actually win the item, is not to pay for it & then the seller will file a Non Payment claim against you. But this will really badly affect your feedback rating on Ebay & is unfair on the seller, who will have to relist the item and incur more listing fees- I really wouldn't recommend this option.

Good luck!

Don't do that, it's really not fair to the poor seller. It's not as if this is their fault. Would you like that to be done to you??

Much better to just tell them you've made a mistake, explain honestly.

Seller will at least then be able to put up for sale again straight away, without being mucked about.
