debbie
Hi all Need some advice please, Penny didn't come out of the eglu this morning as normal, I left her in there for a couple of hours because I thought she might be laying an early morning egg. She still didn't come out...so I went in through the egg port and she didn't move, she looks well and ok. I trying gently lfting her and she kept looking underneath her, she was sitting on 2 eggs, so I'm guessing that she has gone broody. I've removed te eggs and lifted her out of the eglu and shut the door. She hasn't drunk any water and she is looking sorry for herself and her tail is down. She has had a couple of beak fulls of porrige but not much. I've looked at the stickys and I still think that she could be broody but do you think it would be a good ideaif I popped her to the vets anyway just to get her looked over. Many thanks Debbie
Egluntyne
I wouldn't rush to the vets just yet, unless you are sure she is ill. They undergo a personality change when broody and become rather snappy, and puff themselves up. Open the door briefly and if she heads back in to sit determinedly on the nest box, then you could be right. I found a blue frozen ice pack in the nest box worked, but others didn't have any success with it. Another way to snap her out of it is to dunk her in cold water two or three times a day to cool her down. Oh....and keeping her out of the nest box, which is a nuisance when you have others who want to lay an egg! Good luck
debbie
Hi Thanks for your advive Egluntine, I couldn't be sure if it was broodiness or if she was poorly so I took her to the vets just to be sure. Poor little chookie, she had a thermoniter up her botty and the reading went off the scale . The vet said she was too hot even for a broody so she is now on a course of antibiotics. I've come home a trembling reck, hope she feels better soon, so I'm on chicken watch all day, the vet said to phone him tommorow morning to let him know how she is, I don't know whether thats a good thing or not. Keeping my fingers crossed I'll tempt her later with her fav. treat later ( tomarto ) Sorry to go on and on but I know you'll understand as you all love your chooks.
