chestnutmare
I have been told by a lovely friend of mine that they are noisy. How noisy are they? I am doing a search on YouTube now for pekins but they're all quiet or making little cute noises. If anyone's got a video of their noisy pekin please post.... so I know what I might be letting myself in for.
Egluntyne
One of mine yaps continuously if I am in the vicinity, but apart from that, they aren't too bad.
Groovychook
Mine is very noisy when she's building herself up to lay an egg but not especially vocal the rest of the time
coco
Mine a very quiet, my minature silkies make the most noise, maybe the pekins just can't get a word in.
Griffin
Yes! I've had to rehome my two because of their shouting and I wouldn't risk any others while I live here. It's a shame because they are lovely ladies to have.
chestnutmare
Thanks for the replies. I suppose it has a lot to do with the individual chickens...?
Mum
It does depend on the particular character, but I do have to say Pekins - in my experience - have been the noisiest. But, it isn't simply that they make a noise, it is the type of noise they make. A bwark bwark, or a chook-chook-chook actually isn't an unpleasant sound as far as daily chit chat goes, but, Pekins have a way of shrieking-style which hits right in the nail on a blackboard boundary (for me, at least). Kazzy73
Our frizzle silkie makes the most awful noise but she is just coming into lay so maybe its that but the pekin has to make a racket to be heard over the frizzle so can be very very noisy when they start
LizzieLloyd
my pekin is the alarm chicken of our brood and will squawk horribly if something startles her. She's definitely the noisiest of the bunch

You've hit the nail on the head, it's not a 'normal' noise they make. One of my little darlings would start shrieking at 5am And it's relentless, they don't just do it a couple of times, it goes on and on and on and on........ chestnutmare
Oh dear. This is sounding less like 'an individual chicken thing' to a pekin thing!!
Cheeky Chooky
Mine is very noisy when she's building herself up to lay an egg but not especially vocal the rest of the time Similar situation here...Humbug does her "I've laid an egg" song, way before she actually has but she's always in the Cube when she does it so it isn't too bad and the rest of the day both she and Pumpkin are pretty quiet
Groovychook
Oh dear. This is sounding less like 'an individual chicken thing' to a pekin thing!! They are absolutely adorable though... little bouncing balls- full of character!
grracee
My two pekins girls are really quiet. They do abit of a chuckle to each other first thing in the morning before I let them out and then I hardly hear a peep out of them afterwards. Must have picked ones who don't have a voice box
Dahato3
We have 5 pekins at the moment (as well as large fowl). I find that they tend to be very noisy in the run up to laying an egg but once they have laid all becomes peaceful again. I would also add that in my experience, pekins are much quieter in the mornings prior to being let out compared to my large fowl!
