The Good Life Again! - UPDATE!

Recommended Posts

Oooops! - I bet he wasn't populer!

We plumped for middle whites, youngest doesn't think they look as cute as other pigs so hopefully making the deed, not easier, but more copable. (If that's a word).

They are just beginning to settle in and ran to me for their food this morning.

They're not as cute.....but I bet you'll still find it difficult :? .

Lewis - George suddenly realised what the bottle was for last week and now he has his bottle in the bottle rack. He's so quick that you could hold the bottle for him but he has a nasty habit of bunting the bottle really hard and smashing your hand against the hurdles. He's nibbling at hay and grass but doesn't know what concentrates are yet, he has a few in the trough and we try to hand feed him some but he just thinks more milk will arrive from sleeves or fingers.

Having more than one lamb seems to be easier, they are quicker to wean.

The piggies are in the freezer now :? - but they do taste good!! 8)

I'd forgotten how small George was  - Carl's struggling to carry him now and we mostly use a rope halter to walk him over to his day nursery. We have a lot of fox activity and we don't like to leave him as he's on his own so we pop him back in the locked outbuilding overnight. He'll soon be big enough to stay out in the barn. The older ladies come and inspect him through the fence.

One very naughty sheep!

George is only two weeks older than the new ones but a larger breed.......Mike is a Lleyn (cousin to Tahsa's Kilo I think) and Basil is a BFL girl!! (Lewis said we have to call her Basil!)

:D

Mike + Basil are from the same farm as Kilo but they're separate pure breeds.

Basil is a top pedigree BFL - think a relative sold for £23,000 a couple years ago!! Extra reasons for Carl to keep her

I have a video I took while they were here, will get it onto laptop + post it!

Lesley has 6 less mouths to feed now 6 of the Table birds from last summer have been 'done' - think my suggestion to do them came as a bit of a shock... sorry!

 - we have to build up to it Lewis.......Carl was OK once he'd got the cone out and bopped them. I think a couple of them will be skinned later - I can't get all those winter coat feathers out  Thanks for the help.

I thought Mike and Kilo were the same breed........they look the same to me

....and if Basil is to be worth 23K then she needs a new name!!!!

Hmmmmm.........Basil and Mike???? oh, you mean Charlie and Ellie :lol:

They're doing really well, Ellie/Basil's eyes are better now and she's looking really good. We let them into the paddock with the other ewes on Saturday - the No.1 ewe went over and stamped her feet at them but they had their heads down in the grass and ignored her  I wondered how Kilo was getting on.

Hatchlings - 11 in total Clare, I was amazed after the debacle of starting them in the incy then putting them under a broody we borrowed........only for her to give up a couple of days later and the eggs going back in the incy. The Cream Legbar doesn't look quite right - they are autosexing and we should have been able to tell what it was but it doesn't look like either the male or female CL so I think I might have accidentally hatched a hybrid Skyline egg instead, the other blue eggs didn't hatch so I'm going to set a few of the eggs from the other CL cockerel's 'wives' to see whether the infertility lies with him or the CL hen. I'll candle them at 8 days and see what is happening.

I'll post photos tomorrow.

Lesley! Finally catching up with the forum......it's always lovely to see your piccies and hear your news

I've just been looking through your photos :D

We think it may be 4 hens and 1 cockerel so fingers crossed. The Marans appear to be one of each and the LS 2 hens and 1 cockerel. The supposed CL could be either as no distinct colouring but feathering suggested a hen, even if it was a Skyline hybrid egg a hen may lay blue eggs.
