Ariella26
I'm pretty sure that I've read many of you use Bliss, but when I enquired about using it in the cube from a local supplier, I was told it wasn't suitable as it's a form of straw and straw isn't suitable for Chickens. Please can someone confirm that it is okay to use as otherwise I think the only alternative I can find locally is Cozy Coop. Thank you. sjp
I use Bliss and have done for a fair while now. it's made from chopped up rape seed plants with added chopped straw I've had no problems with it at all and it's cheaper than the hemp based bedding favored by a lot of members on here
Groovychook
I use it as it's just about the only thing I can get hold of these days! I quite like it actually, it's absorbent and finely chopped. It's also very reasonable!
jennym
I use straw in the nest box. I'm not sure why he said straw isn't suitable for chickens - many people use it. I've seen other comments about straw being bad for chickens but I have searched high and low for any references or evidence of this and I can't find any. Some people say red mites could hide in the hollow strands of straw but I haven't had any of the little nasties. I change the straw regularly anyway as the little darlings poop in the nest box quite a bit Sometimes I wonder if people are confusing hay & straw Hay is not suitable for two reasons, as I understand it - 1. chooks might eat it and it can get tangled up and cause an impaction and 2. hay has quite a bit of organic matter in it and will rot pretty easily when damp/dirty. Anyway, I'm just thinking aloud here - I do prattle on I guess what I'm saying is that it wouldn't worry me if the bedding has straw in it. Ariella26
Thanks everyone. I'm content to stick with Bliss then as I know I can get it locally and it is reasonably priced. Do any of you know where I can purchase cardboard poultry boxes to transport my chooks in when I go to collect them? I'm not sure if this is something I should get or whether the farms automatically provide them to send the chickens home in. Are they are a certain size or would rabbit sized ones do? Cheeky Chooky
A cardboard box from the Supermarket, punctured with lots of air holes and lined with sawdust in the bottom would be just fine
