Jules.
Bit nervous for her, we haven't had an animal neutered since 1995, & then that was a boy cat so not so traumatic , I've no experience of female dogs being neutered. I'm going to give her some arnica pillules in her food Saturday & Sunday, & then she's at the vet first thing on Monday morning. Lily is used to being crated at night, & also for short periods in the day if we go out. She can spend alot of her recovery time in there. Is there anything else I should do to help her recover quickly? Lavenders_Blue
Awww bless, Lily will be just fine. We had Tango spayed in January and I was a bit worried too before the op. When we picked her up from the vets she was still groggy from the anaesthetic and was shivering a lot - I think a combination of shock and the effects of the anaesthetic. We kept her warm and quiet for the rest of the day. Unfortunately, after that first night, she decided she was okay and wasn't keen on resting! It's good that Lily is crate trained as you can pop her in there for some time out if she starts getting hyper. We don't have a crate for Tango, so just had to manage. We found that little lead walks helped calm Tango. We kept her on a short lead and just pottered slowly to the paddock at the end of our road and back, with lots of time for sniffing. It meant we could be out for a while but not actually go very far so it kept her occupied for a bit. We also gave Tango her food stuffed into a kong so that it took longer to eat and kept her busy. Unfortunately by day 10 she was climbing the walls but we did get there! I don't know how calm your dog is, but Tango is fairly hyper, so keeping her quiet was no mean feat The main thing is to keep Lily as quiet as you can, but find ways to occupy her as she will probably get bored if not able to go on her usual walks, play ball games etc. She will probably appreciate lots of extra cuddles too! chickensaregreat
Lots of things to keep her occupied!!! We had our dog spayed about six months ago and i remember she wasn't meant to jump up and things like that for about ten days after the operation. A lot of toys were needed but we were very glad when she could go for normal walks again!!
loumabel
When I had my Meg spayed, I noticed she didnt seem to be able to hold her water for long and had to be let out for lots of wee's for a couple of weeks The vet also gave me a dap collar for her to help reassure her but I am not too convinced this helped at all. Good luck and big hugs to LIly.
Bramble
I think she'll be just fine, the problem I've found with pets who are (supposed to be) poorly, is convincing them!!! She will be back to normal by the next day probably! She might be a stitch nibbler so comfy collars are great : http://www.comfycollars.co.uk/ Or even get an old T shirt for her to wear! Good luck Lily!
The Dogmother
Nothing to add except to say to give her plenty of Arnica, dot a wee bit of menthol (Vaporub or Tiger Balm) near the stitches and she'll leave them alone - far better than the stress of wearing the Cone of Shame. Good luck with keeping her quiet - never works with lurchers
Jules.
Thank you all for your good advice. After all our worry Lily is fighting fit. She was tired & shivery when we brought her home on Monday night, so she lay in her basket in front of the fire covered up in a blanket, & we took it in turns to sit with her. Then she went to bed in her crate & slept well The next morning she was back to her usual self almost. She went back to the vet on Wednesday for a routine check up & all was well, & she even had a little walk yesterday. The tip about the tiger balm was a good one, she hadn't tried to lick her stitches when she was at the vet but we put some on her just in case. Lavenders_Blue she certainly loves the extra cuddles she's been getting, she thinks that she is a lap dog anyway, but at 18kg already that's some large lap dog to have sat on you Oh, & the vet said they were glad when she left them after her operation, as she was whining & fussing so much she had set all the other dogs there off barking
Lavenders_Blue
So glad Lily is recovering well. It's such a worry isn't it, but I think animals often cope far better with these things than we do. Glad she is enjoying her extra cuddles but I agree 18kg is quite a big lap dog!

The Dogmother
I know, makes me laugh when they say 'keep them quiet'.... as if I'm ever going to be able to keep a lurcher puppy quiet Rubes was subdued for all of about 8 hours, then was back to her normal whirlwind impression.
