Massive Eggs and not well

Recommended Posts

One of our hens has up until the last 3 weeks laid medium to large eggs. She now lays what can only be described as extra large eggs on a 2 to 3 day basis. This morning we have woken to her not being well at all. She has laid a couple of what seem just yolks as well in between these extra large jobbies. Tail is down, she is drinking but is not happy at all. There seems to be something hanging out of her vent or bum which we are going to examine with a bath shortly. Any suggestions?

It sounds as if there is a problem with her shell making equipment. She now may have some shell caught up inside if you can see some matter hanging from her vent? I think a warm bath and a gloved finger  may be the best approach. Someone else with more knowledge than me should be able to tell you more tho....

Good luck.

Thanks for the relpies.

We have given her a bath and the matter at her rear seems to be soft poo but not wholy sure as it was on the feathers around the area. We did notice that her vent was a bit protruding and was pulsating also but thought this was just stess of the moment. She has had a bit of a scratch around but not much and is still tail down on the perch looking very under the weather.

What is the situation with a prolaps?

Recently had similar problem, Grace laid 3 eggs of 104gms each over 5 days. She then became poorly with yellow/green poo, possible egg, probably soft or shell-less that she couldn't pass. Vet said she may have ran out of calcium to produce shells, due to the size of the eggs.

Do you have any Zolcal D, this worked for Grace, as it gives a calcium boost that helps the hen to pass the egg. We gave it to her over 3 days and she gradually passed bits of the egg, some were liquid, final bits were like hard scrambled egg.

You can get it on=line, or a vet can give a calcium injection or similar product.

Don't leave it though as an un-passed egg can lead to peritonitis.

Good Luck

Peggy (special needs hen) used to lay yolks only, but when a soft shell came along, it was always followed by a bit of poo (lovely). Tried all the usual stuff, but nothing ever worked. The only way I found to get the shell out was to hold her, and blow gently on the vent.... It then starts moving in and out, and I can get a bit of the shell. DON'T PULL IT THOUGH, I've found just by supporting it and letting her do the work, I get the shell out. Hen keeping's FUN!!
